My 2005 Dodge Carvan is having the same issue. Everytime I start it in the morning there's a loud screeching sound and even after the first 20 minutes the sound doesn't go away. If I travel on the freeway it does go away not sure what this is, but I am having it looked at on Saturday if I find out anything I'll make sure to come back and post.

It has been very very cold. When you start the engine, there is an initial crank screech and that is the only time I hear it. Secondly, uUntil the engine warms up, you can hear the rpm's making noise - i.e. when you accelerate, the noise accelerates. I was thinking maybe when I got the oil changed, they did not put in winter worthy oil?? I checked all the fluids and they were fine. It might be time for a trip to the mechanic. Thought too of the Power Steering fluid, but the level looked good....Also purchased a new battery since the noise - it was time. The radiator level was low, at the bottom of the range, so I capped off the level in the reserve.

I had the same problem and it was the alternator bearing, but before you replace it, make it sure it is the alternator, because it could be any bearing

Could be your alternator. at start up. alternator usually has a big load because you just use your starter. it would recharge the battery and after a while the battery would be fully charge, the squealing noise will be gone.

check also all the belts if they are individual belts. use some belt dressings to eliminate the noise. sometimes the belt are just worn out and it would also make these noises.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Get it towed to a shop. Sounds like an idler or tensioner going bad. If it failed you will bend valves and damage the engine badly.

There are 3 belts on the truck (1994 V6, 4wd). The belt that goes around the alternator was not spinning and there was a loud screeching noise. I cut the alternator belt to see what the truck would do with...

The pulleys may be out of alignment due to a bent or misinstalled alternator bracket. the alternator itself may be pulling so much current that the belt is slipping on its pulley. (might be why the other alternator failed. Check the battery voltage with everything turned off and see if you have a parasitic battery drain.) The bearing for the idler pulley (if equipped) could be failing.

Upon start up there is a loud squeal. It continues while driving however when placed in neutral it quietly goes away. Recent oil change. Fluids good. 180,000 miles. Still occurs when a/c is off.

Try to isolate the noise. See if it's coming from the front of engine or transmission. Also try to see if it's on the left side or right side of engine. Once you have narrowed it down you then should be able to pinpoint the problem area. eg altenator, power steering pump, idler pulley etc.

Loud screeching noise upon starting

It is your serpentine belt slipping on one of the metal pulleys and the friction is causing the high pitch screech. The belt may need to be tightened or replaced, which is an easy fix.

Do you have the defrost on when it is doing this? Turn it off and see if it goes away. I'm still thinking A/C compressor.

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

if you have climate control the a/c comp. comes on
intermitently if the clutch is going bad thats a suspect also the idler pully bearing could be tired
or the ps pump could be binding.
one way to narrow the field is the next you shut it off
after driving a short time see if any of the is noticably
hotter than the others thats a place to start.
hope this helps good luck

I have a 1990 jeep YJ replaced the alternator and now there is a loud screeching noise replaced the belt, replaced new bearing in idler pulley still makes a loud screeching noise?

If the belt is not tense enough it will squeal, so make sure it's tight enough. Otherwise you can use a stethoscope or long screwdriver up to your ear to isolate the source of the noise.
