You take off the resistor and you put a swithc in the dasboard to put the fan off or on. You will have to check your temperature gauge.

My '99 323 ci's air blower fan became loud so I turned the fan off. It won't go back on.

Replace resistor pack. a four prong thing. Google: resistor pack 3 series e36. When they go bad the fan only goes to fast mode and can blow the fuse. Check fuse, relay, but resistor pack 1st.

Bmw 3 series fan failure!?!

most likely the blower motor hasn't failed. Usually the final stage transistor(blower resistor) goes out. I would recommend taking your vehicle to the dealership neither component is easy to replace and a bmw dealership always stands behind their repairs
