Question about 1988 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Steering wheel There is quite a bit of play on my steering wheel. I have a 1988 Silvrado 1500.

You are going to need the front end checked for worn componets, start with sterering box and check everything that moves, tie rods idler arm ect. how many miles?

Sparks under steering wheel of dodge ram 1500 2003


My blower on my 04 would randomly cut off but if you tilted the steering it would sometimes work again. Pulled the cover off the steering column and found that one off the connections(plug ins) was arking. Squeased connection closed a bit more with a small screw driver and put some electrical dilithium grease in it and haven't had a problem since.

In the dash to the left of the steering wheel.There is a fuse panel that you pull off.It should be marked 4wd.

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 with 3 inch lift and 33 inch tires. My question is i have alot of play in the steering wheel, probably 3 to 4 inches each way. what could be the problem?...and also my...


The play in the steering wheel could be a combination of several issues, but if you haven't replaced the track bar bushings latley that will make a huge improvement. Stabilizer bar bushings, tie rod bushings, link and pitman arm bushings will all make huge improvements. On a larger more costly scale, it could be your steering gear box or coupler ($260.00 installed), this can be determined by trying to manually turn your steering bar by hand, if you can it's bad. The bushings on all parts are a relatively easy fix but I recommend getting a two-jaw puller, the ball joints can be a bit stubborn. My first bet is the track bar, hope this helps

2 inches @ the steering wheel? i do not recommend tampering with the screw on the gearbox. that is for adjusting the sector shaft, usually only adjusted on high mileage gearboxes. since most of your driving is straight the gearbox worm gear wears out in that position, by adjusting it, it tightens up the gap in the gears the problem comes in when turning because it can be too tight on the ends of the shaft possibly binding up in your gearbox.and no matter what happens next it probably wont be good. try checking the couplings in the steering shaft. with the vehicle off, steering unlocked, have someone move the steering wheel left and right making sure not to move the tires, your looking to see play at all joints, couplings, or pivots. where you see one piece moving and the other not.

While driving down the road my 88 chevy 1500 wants to swerve to the left and then to the right. I had the wheels balanced, and have put new shocks on the front. Any ideas?


Check ball joints and tie rod ends for play. Jack the truck up on the frame and try to move the wheel up and down for ball joints and side ti side for tie rod ends. Also make sure you check the idler arm on passenger side and pitman arm on steering box. None of the parts should any play whatsoever. If there is any play in them when you try to move them then replace them.
There could also be excessive play in the steering box but that shouldn't make it swerve back and forth. That would just let it wander to one side or the other until you corrected it by turning the wheel. Hope this helps.

If your steering box is in the same place mine is, the adjustment is hidden under the radiator shroud.Generally this will remove a bit of steering play but it has to be done carefully to avoid binding.
What you really need to do is to check the entire front end for any play. Remember that "acceptable" play in one component when added to "acceptable" play in several other components = unacceptable overall play.All bushings, joints etc must be checked. Shocks need to be in good condition as well. If everything is in good condition, find a good alignment shop and ask them if it's possible to add a few degrees of positive caster to your present settings. If you have adjustment for this it will help to keep it going straight at speed. (may make turns a bit harder but with p/s it should not be noticed.

Tilt steering play


you need a new steering column,,,,go to a salvage and get one with a key but there is no fixing the old one,,,a used one should run about 75.00 and is not hard to put in
