Question about 1999 Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

Starting Problems Every 15 or so starts my 1999 Intrepid doesn't want to start. I sounds like it is trying to start but doesn't want to turn over. When it finally does it sputters for about a minute then everything is fine except for a misting or hissing sound every once in a while when you hit the accelerator. I have had the battery, starter, and alternator checked and they said they are fine. I have also used fuel injector cleaner the last 2 times I have fueled up and I'm still having the problem.

The first thing you need to do is to try a jump start. If it starts that rules out the starters and engine, and points to either the battery or the alternator. If it doesn't start then you need to pull the serpentine belt and try to turn the crankshaft with a wrench (CW) if it turns then the engine is free and the most likely cause is the starter.

Starting problems are a pain to diagnose, so if the above doesn't help you need to make sure you have fuel flow (fuel filter and fuel pump) and spark by pulling off a spark plug wire and sparking to the frame.

1999 Dodge intrepid tries to turn over but won't/can't. Everything turns on electronically that's supposed to, brand new battery.

clicking sound heard? starts fast then slows down as you crank over engine?ok try this --at the starter there is an electrical connection -- B+red wire and a smaller wire make sure these connections are tight. if ok proceed to next step--if you hear a low clicking sound when you turn the key and when trying to jump start the car still hear a click sound have someone tap on starter while you try to start it --- if car starts the starter solenoid is bad, anything more please write me back, Lee Davidian

I can drive my 1999 dodge intrepid for a while and cant start it

Many vehicles turn on the electric cooling fan if the temperature is high under the hood which prevents hard starting of a hot engine.
If yours never has had the fan run for a minute or two, then it isn't supposed to but if it did it once but now doesn't, the thermal switch that should turn it on has failed.
Try holding the gas pedal to the floor before turning the key; if it starts, then there was too much gasoline in the cylinders causing wet plugs which don't want to fire.

99 intrepid hard to start and or cutts out, what is my solution

n most 90's and up Dodge/Chrysler vehicles, you can try to pull codes from the car's computer as long as you still have a charged battery. Put your key in the ignition, and turn it forward, but not far enough to engage the starter. Turn the key back to the Off position, then forward, back and forward again. In early 90s vehicles, the Check Engine light is going to flash a number of times. Often, code 55 means it is completed.
In mid and late 90s vehicles, you will often get a 4 digit code that may help you diagnose problems starting, mostly checking the eletrical, ignition and sensor systems.

99 intrepid is trying to start and can't

if the starter seem to be slow when jurking, then you could have a weak battery...
if the battery or starting condition is fine, then you could have a faulty spark plugs, try to clean the spark plugs and with the connectors, disconnect and reconnect them one by one.
if your place is cold then you could be experiencing cold starting problem.
