My 1994 GMC Suburban wont shift out of first.....but will shift to second manually but wont go any higher........?

Sounds like a vehicle speed sensor, it governs shifting based on engine RPM vs Transmission RPM among other things. Located usually on the rear tailshaft or rear transfer case on the majority of 4L60E automatics.

1992 bronco is staying in second and the engine cuts out when it want to down shift.when i let off on the throttle the rpm go up about 500 rpm , its backward to what it is suppose to do. WhY???

check the wire from the speed sencer to the speedometer. if it gets shorted out; it can blow the speedometer senser and then the brain doesnt know what the speed is and which gear to be in. happened to me. new exhaust pipe melted insulation on that wire and like to have never found sollution. went to salvage and replaced speedometer. simple exchange 15-20 min. hpoe this helps. dpg

I just bought a 2001 pontiac grand am se with 99890 miles. I would like to know what rpm is the proper shift point from first to second gear? Mine shifts at like 3000 to 3500 rpm and shifts firmly is that...

Hello, well at what rpm it shifts at of course depends on how hard your pressing the accelerator at that moment,if you floor the accelerator it will shift at higher rpm (red line) but if you take off very slowly it should shift at a much lower rpm....but to answer your question 3000-3500 is a good shifting rpm( if the gauge red lines at 6000-6500 rpm) and firm shifting is a good thing, slow, sluggish and hesitant shifting is a sign of bad things to come from a tranny!! ps keep the engine oil,and transmission oil changed for long life out of your car engine and tranny. good luck and enjoy your new car......yz-maniac.

Transmission dosnt shift when truck warms up

FYI
I have a 1995 GMC 1500 with 5.7 truck that the ABS Light comes on and then the tranny starts jumping gears and speedo goes crazy- Changed ignition switch and that did not help.
You said that you had changed the speed sensor on the tranny and that did not help ?? If so that was my next step. Let me know if you find and answer and I will do likewise.

possible speed sensor at rear of transmission, does engine rpm sound higher then narmal, and is your trans shifting as it should,if these problems are also present replace the speedometer sensor at rear of trans,$50 to 60 bucks

check and make sure all the fuses are in good but it sounds like a bad ground wire

Fuse of speedometer etc.

could be a short that doesn't touch until the "jerky" motion of shifting gears. Maybe a wire is resting near metal and everytime there is a motion it touches the metal and blows your fuse.
I would check continuity with ta voltmeter from your instument panel to the fuse box. and that will tell you if the line has a short anywhere between the two.
Any good 12v car audio mech can do this quicker and cheaper than a dealer.
