How do I run the OBD 2 test? Do I need special equipment?

  • TC1965 Oct 13, 2008

    Cool, I performed the following:

    OFF + HI = E.0.0

    Turned OFF ignition

    performed another test and received:

    E.9.5

I haven't tried starting it yet...ran back in and posted...hopefully, this won't be too expensive.

Thank you so much emissionwiz, you are a ray of light in my rainy day for helping me get this far...

These may have been set by the battery change and are what GM calls phamtom codes, clear the codes with the following.
Try this and see if the codes go away.

1. Re-enter diagnostics via the climate control panel and after all the codes appear you will see .7.0

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and HI (^) buttons on the climate control panel until you see E.0.0 and release both buttons.

3. Turn ignition key OFF, Wait 15 seconds and re-enter diagnostics and see if the codes reappear. If they do NOT reappear, You are good to go.
After you have done this try starting the engine and see what codes re-appear, also run and OBD 2 test of the system at the diagnostic connector, this will give P codes that we are better able to find definitions for, the E codes are unique to just a few GM cars.

Here is more useful info if you don't already know it.

    ECM Output Cycling

    This mode can be initiated after "E.9.5" is displayed on the "Fuel Data Center". The display of the "E.9.5" can be reached by depressing the Hi button while Code ".7.0" is displayed. The ECM output cycling mode, Code "E.9.6." turns the ECM's outputs on and off. To enter the output cycling mode, proceed as follows;

    The engine must be running.

Turn the cruise instrument panel switch to the on position so that the cruise control outputs will cycle.

Turn the engine off and within two seconds, turn the ignition on.

Enter the diagnostics and display Code "E.9.5".

Depress the accelerator pedal (throttle switch open) and release it (throttle switch closed). The ECM output cycling mode begins as the display switches from Code "E.9.5" to Code "E.9.6."

It is possible to leave the ECM output cycling mode at any time and return to ".7.0" by clearing the ECM and BCM codes. If the display does not advance to Code "E.9.6", refer to Code "E.7.2" of the switch test.

The output cycling mode will end automatically after two minutes of cycling and the display will switch from Code "E.9.6" to Code "E.9.5".

The outputs will cycle on and off every three seconds until the two minute automatic shut off occurs. The only exception to this three second cycle is the cruise control power valve which cycles continuously. If additional output cycling is desired, recycle the throttle switch.

Just put new spark plugs and wires, rotor+cap, new coil, new ignition control module

According to this site:
have code E52 PCM Memory Reset how do do this

99% of the time e52 is just telling you the battery was disconnected in the last X number of starts. It will probably go away after a day or two of ignition cycles. If the battery has been pulled then any other trouble codes would have been cleared and will not come back until they are re-detected, May have to drive it a bit to get any new codes to appear to help trace your problems.

In my 2002 cadillac deville my tc light always on my gas and temperature gauges stop working how can I fix thi s can I reset my dash panel

You can try resetting any vehicle error codes (DTCs) with a code scanner. Depending on which instrument panel (IPC) you have, you may be able to put your IPC in diagnostic mode and reset any DTCs from there. Simultaneously hold the top of the Info button and the On/Off buttons for several seconds to go to diagnostic mode; then use these buttons to navigate the options showing on the IPC. Before resetting the DTCs, make sure you record the DTCs - you can look them up on the internet. If resetting doesn't solve your problem, the IPC is probably toast.

My 1993 cadillac is reading error code e 48 what could this be.

UNHOOK THE CARS BATTERY GROUND FOR 10 SECONDS THIS WILL REBOOT THE COMPUTER . IF YOU DRIVE IT AROUND FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES TRY TO GET IT OVER 30 MPH AT 1 POINT , ALL THE PERPETRATORS SHOULD BE SET, AND IT SHOULD RUN NORMALY. IF THE CODE COMES UP AGAIN, I THINK THATS THE EGR CODE. BRING IT TO YOUR LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND HAVE THEM CHECK THE CODES.. THEY DO IT FOR FREE.. YOU MIGHT NEED A REPAIR PART . ASK YOUR PARTS STORE GUY HOW AND WHERE ?? RESET COMMUTER AGAIN AFTER REPAIR.. IT WILL RESET ITSELF BUT IT CAN TAKE UP TO 50 IGNITION CYCLES .. HOPE I WAS OF SOME HELP .. JAY

Have a 2002 Cadillac deville that has had a intermittant problem starting at times. Maybe one time every month or so you hit the key and the lights and power goes out but nothing !!! If you wait a while it...

Have you checked to see if there are any error codes with an OBDII reader? With those indications, there should be so errors generated. It will give us a place to start looking!

But if there isn't an error code - something is drawing maximum power, and it is probably the starter or starter solenoid.

Can anyone tell me what the following codes are on my 1997 Cadillac Deville?? P0139, P0603, P1139, and P1599.....

Firstly, they are al P type codes, which refers to PCM.

P0139 - HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) Slow Response Bank 1 Sensor 2. This is is the sensor in front of the catalytic converter.

P0603 - Internal Control Module Keep Alive Memory error. This error normally comes up when the battery is disconnected.

P1139 - HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) Insufficent Switching Bank 1 Sensor 2. (see above)

P1599 - Engine Stall or Near Stall Detected.

I hope this helps.....I would attempt erasing the codes first and see if they come back, and then going from there.

When pressing the gas the car stalls and backfires

There are to many things that can cause the problem you have. Best thing we can do is get the DTC codes to understand better why your car is doing what it's doing.
The On Board Diagnostic (OBD) was designed on vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection so you can generally retrieve the codes yourself. No need buying a scanner or running to any parts stores to check the engine light. This system is called obd1 and applies to most vehicles made before 1995 for domestics.

For GM domestic vehicles made before 1995, the diagnostic connector is located under the dash panel by the driver side. To get the check engine codes to flash in your dash panel, use a jumper wire or a paper clip and connect terminals A and B of the diagnostic connector. Turn your ignition key on with engine off and the codes should start to blink. All codes should start with code 12 which is one long flash followed by 2 short flashes. This code 12 means the diagnostic system is normal and will repeat itself continuously if there are no trouble codes. Otherwise, code 12 will flash 3 times before flashing the fault codes.

Counting the codes being flashed is almost quickest way to understand the Vehical's Engine Management and performance and most of the codes can be erased or cleared by disconnecting the battery negative terminal for 1 minute and reconnect.
Just make sure to check your service manual in case you have electronic equipment such as radio or clock that needs reprogramming in which battery disconnection is not recommended. Finally after performing repairs on the culprit code, always go for a road test to confirm if the problem is fixed.

Good luck and here is a link with the OBD codes, let me know if you need more help. http://chevythunder.com/199295_lt1_trouble_codes.htm#Code 28
