Question about 1995 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Combination Switch Hello. I am having a problem with what I think is the combination switch in my 1995 Pontiac Sunfire. My turn signals are all of a sudden not working regularly, and when they do by chance work they are very slow. I checked out the fuse and it was fine, and then thought it may be the combination switch on the steering wheel. Now normally I would just try and fix this problem on my own, but I have never removed a steering wheel with an air bag in it and was wondering if it was hard to do so, or if it would just be a better idea to take it into a shop, and also wondering if anyone knew what the cost would be for the repair. I know that the part itself goes for $55-$60. Thanks!

You do not have to remove the steering wheel to do this, just remove the upper and lower steering column covers, in which the tilt steering arm needs to be removed if your car has tilt steering, to do this just unthread, sometimes may be very tight nut can use a small pair of vise grips to loosen it just be sure to clamp it on the metal part of the lever not the plastic. Once covers removed, just change the switch and put back tpgehter

My windshield wipers will not turn off and I have no turn signals.

I think your combination switch is malfunctioning. The switches that control both the wipers and the
turn signals are built into the combination switch. And the headlight controls too on some cars.

Your car may have a switch that controls the wipers and the turn signals, but not the headlights.

But whether you have the type that controls wipers/turn signals/headlights or just turn signals/wipers Im not sure, you didnt mention the specific year and model. But you should replace the switch that controls your wipers/signals. They are expensive sometimes, especially if you have the combo switch that controls wipers, headlights and turn signals. But you can find one at a slavage yard for a lot less money than new.

But you should put the year/model of your car when you post a problem youre having. That makes it more likely that someone can help.

First check turn signal fuse and relay if, they are good then try pressing on and off the hazard switch while turning the signal switch on.If signals start to work replace hazard switch. If hazard switch is good then replace turn signal switch.

I need instructions on replacing a turn signal switch. Our current turn signal is no longer returning or cancelling.

For Caravan, Grand Voyager, Town and Country, Voyager, 2000-2004 check this guide for change Turn Signal Switch:
CAUTION The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the air bag or SIR system wiring. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.
  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. In order to disarm the air bag system, allow the system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes, before performing any removal procedures.
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from behind the combination switch.
  5. Remove the mounting screws securing the combination switch to the steering column adapter collar.
  6. Remove the combination switch from the vehicle.

Fig. The turn signal (multi-function) switch is attached to the steering column by two screws

To install:
  1. Install the combination switch to the steering column adapter collar. Tighten the combination switch mounting screws.
  2. Reconnect the electrical connector to the combination switch.
  3. Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds and tighten the retaining screws.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

Turn signal switch quit working

The wipers are not part of it. Have you looked on ebay? Or try some salvage yards nearby. If not an auto parts store has them.

Combinationswitch

You should be able to pick up a combination switch at a self service parts yard(like a Pick N Pull) for about $25-$35.
They are pretty easy to take off.
You need to remove the horn cover. I think four screws. Another four on the **** shaped covers over the combination switch itself.
Once the horn cover is off. You need a steering wheel puller. Very inexpensive at any automotive shop.
Pull the steering wheel, and the combination switch should pull straight up. Follow the wiring down the steering column and you will find a large plug. Unplug it and the switch will come off in your hands.

Good luck.
