96 Grand Am Scan tool won't work

Hi emission wiz, I've got a 96 Grand Am, 3.1 auto, check engine light is on, hooked up my scan tool, keep getting the message 'u must plug scanner into vehicle port' or something to that effect, thought scan tool was screwed up, but works fine on my van. I know it's gotta be problem w/ a wire connected to the port, all pins look good (not bent over or anything) any ideas before I go crawling around under the dash? Thanks! countrycurt0

You must have a problem with the connector, make sure all the wires are locked in the connector.

I replaced the alternator on my 1999 Audi A6 with 2.8 engine. Now the check engine light is on. Was not on prior to the repairn. How do I correct?

Instructions on How to Turn Off The Check Engine Light:
Step 1. If not using a scan tool, locate your vehicle's battery. Disconnect the 12v positive cable (red wire) from battery terminal (+). Leave it disconnect for 5 minutes. While the battery is disconnected, cycle the ignition switch to ON position 3 times. If using a scan tool to turn off the check engine light, follow manufacturers directions. You will need to find your vehicle's OBD II Data Link Connecter (DLC) and connect your scan tool to the DLC, then follow the steps indicated on your scan tool or scan tool manual.

Step 2. Insure ignition switch is OFF. Reconnect the battery 12v positive cable (red wire) to battery terminal (+).

Step 3. Cycle ignition switch to ON position and wait 1 minute, then start your vehicle. Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon Light should be reset and turned OFF.

Step 4. Drive your vehicle for one week under normal driving conditions. During this period the emissions computer is gathering data and re-learning your vehicle's emissions components and systems. The emissions computer OBDII (on-board diagnostics) system must complete at least one drive cycle (in some cases two or three). A drive cycle is a sequence of internal tests which the emissions computer runs while your vehicle is being driven. This insures all emissions systems are functioning properly. Proper "readiness flags" are set as the computer completes it's cycles. Test cycles are unique to a vehicle. Certain cycles run under very strict parameters, and may require extended driving time to trigger on. Cycle data and readiness flag information is available through your dealership's service department. The data vary widely.

Code 13

2004 Jeep? grand Cherokee?
why 2 digits?, where did you see that? very odd that.
are you posting to year 2004 in error?
do post car brand model, GC.
and post year, post engine option (size)

beg, barrow, rent or get loaned (many stores loan it) or ask you mech.
to scan the PCM. (watch out for poor shops with ratty tools)

any scan tool that has JEEP factory code support works best.
one of the best is INNOVA 3160

or drive to any auto repair shop. and ask them to scan car
many will do it for free, as good faith and easy way to get work.

jeeps 1996 to 2000 any scan tool works
93-95 year needs a special OBD1 jeep scan tool , $150?
old that 1993 , only very expensive dealer type tools work. DRB1 or 2.

the operators guide in the glove box, says what to do .
did you lose that?

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee keeps cutting off and won't start some times

I would start by going to an auto parts store and having them scan the computer for codes, even if the engine light is not on. i have heard about auto part stores saying they can not scan if light is not on. i am not sure if it is the scan tool they use or what but sometimes there could be a pending code where the computer is waiting to see the problem again before turning light on. if this is the case then ask them to scan it anyway or go to a shop and ask them to do it. the reason for this is that these trucks have crank sensor problems.

the next time is dies check for spark, remove a sparkplug wire and place a screw driver into the boot of the wire and place it near a ground, a metal surface and then have someone crank the engine and see if there is spark. if there is no spark or you got a code of the crank sensor then i would replace the crank sensor, but if you have good spark and truck will not start then try spraying starting fluid into throttle body and see if it starts and dies out if it does then fuel pump problem.

If you have a fuel pressure gauge then hook that up and crank engine and see if you have fuel pressure and how much.

I will say that this does sound like a bad crank sensor, it dies and then wont start for a while ...

Check engine light is on don't know why

The check engine light comes on when a part of the cars emission system has a problem it could be a loose gas cap to needing a tune up to catalytic converters going bad. If you take the car to a local Auto Zone or Advace they can hook it to a scan tool and help give you a general idea to what is going on.

I just bought a 2006 dodge grand caravan with 66,000 miles on it and the check-engine light came on!!! It seems to still drive fine but I am not sure what this is caused from!!!

Take it to Advance Auto Parts, or Auto Zone, they will scan your computer for free to get the code and tell you what it means. May just be a sensor, or the gas cap isn't tight (emissions) may or may not be serious. Thanks.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, and all fluid is ok, check oil, trns ok

Any check engine light for a car of this year or newer is sent through the car's main computer. If you go to Advanced Auto or any other like auto store, they will be able to hook your car up to a machine which will tell you exactly what is wrong. They will also be able to offer advice on how to repair.

The check engine light suddenly came on. I checked the engine oil and it is ok while the car computer reflects oil life at 30%. The engine runs smoothly, is not overheating and has never given any...

It can be many things. The Check Engine Light indicates the ECU has detected that something is not as it should be with the emissions system. If the engine is running great then you can continue to drive the car until you get it repaired. You need to have the computer scanned with an OBD2 scan tool. This tool will retrieve the code that has been set by the ECU. That code will tell you where to start looking for the problem. It can be as simple as a loose gas cap, a defective O2 sensor, or any number of other problems. Some auto parts stores will scan the vehicle for free.

Check engine indicator is on

HI. This will require you to have the engine CPU scanned for trouble code's. This can only be administered with the assistance of a diagnostic computer scan tool. You can purchase this tool, at your local auto parts store, or you can just have the scan ran at your local auto zone parts store, free of charge. Once the diagnostic scan is administered, you will be able to isolate the issues that have caused the check engine light to illuminate.

This scan tool will display a print out code and the location of the issue, on the engine, as well. There are Many issues that will cause the engine light to illuminate, but the most common cause will be a failed monitoring sensor, or sensor harness failure(separated power wire, or ground).

Once you have the codes, kindly return to the site, and post them here. We will be able to assist with more accuracy, once the codes are posted.
