I have a 97 buick, high miles problem is similar to "car shuts down while driving" My buick does shut down but not consistently. It is more often in stop and traffic when engine is hot. I have to immediately shift to "neutral" turn ignition back on, keep my left foot on the brake and right foor slightly depressed on the accelerartor pedal. Do this all in the same motion. This is very scary esp. in traffic. When engine is cold and I use remote start it starts great and holds it own idle. After driving for a while and I shut down and start again, it CHUGS and tries to idle but quits.

Another solution given was that the 2nd gear switch in the transmission could be the problem and needs to be replaced. Does this seem likely?

I want to thank emmission wiz and ready2helpu for taking the time to answer. I am not a mechanic but will run your answers past my mechanic. I know that he has run multiple diagnostic tests and has worked with many possible solutions, none has worked 100%. I would say 65% solved but still have this problem just less frequent. Hopefully, I can now cure it 100% If you feel there might be something you missed please sent it in.

    Thank You, DanB

It is very likely the part that is giving you the problem is a Crankshaft Position Sensor, they go open circuit when they get hot, then after it cools it becomes a good circuit again, this is very frustrating, had the same issue with my Buick a few years ago, replaced the coils and the ignition module at a cost of hundreds, DID NOT CHANGE A THING, the crank sensor fixed the problem and was $30.00 from Buick.

My 97 Lesabre shuts off while driving-it doesn't give a sound. It does not come back on immediatley. It first seems like it is the battery but the lights/radio/etc..stay on. Why would the car do that...I want to fix it but I don't know what to fix. Please help?

Most the time its either the crank shaft sensor o r ignition module. When the car quits and doesnt start again, grab a volt meter, chace the wires to the crank shaft sensor ad hit it with the volt meter. Should be a groud a positive and a signal wire. If the signal wire doesnt read anything from 0-5 volts when cranked. The crank shaft sensor is shot. If it does read then its most likely the ignition module. To my knowledge not really any test to test it besides swapping in a new one

Replace your Crankshaft Position Sensor. Cost about 40 to 60.00 for part plus labor.

I just had the same problem and having it replace today.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a throttle positioning sensor, or fuel regulator.
also
Sounds like bad coil(s). Once the coils cool they work then get hot and short .

thanks.

Camshaft Position Sensor. Not the crankshaft position sensor, where a no start condition would occur.

check the fuel pressure from fuel pump it may be bad. its a possibility that the coils maybe getting hot and shutting down engine. but check the fuel pump relay in fuse box. to see if this is your problem. it could be getting hot and shutting down, just replace it.is the check engine light on ! if so you can go to auto-zone and they will scan it for free of charge. to find problem code. with OBD-II scanner. good-day !!

I replaced the ac compressor on my 97 lesabre. the air woks fine and gets cold and you shuy the car off and then crank the car within a couple of hours the compressor clutch will not engage. Let it sit...

I would check the air gap on the drive to driven plate of the ac compressor clutch, it should be no more than 0.30 thousanths of an inch, if it is excessive you can have this problem, check it with a hot engine, if it is excessive you can adjust it with a special shim kit from the dealer.

Its the distributor module. The module in the dist. that tells the plugs to fire. When it gets hot it shuts down till it gets cool again. Had that same problem on several cars.
