Question about 1997 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1 Answer

New fuel pump had to be hot wired thruogh a toggle switch, stock connections not working.

I bought a 97 s10 two wheel drive that had been rolled in an accident.the cab was kinda crunched on the passenger side. i removed and tested the fuel pump. it was dead.installed new pump through stock wiring and got nothing. i ran a toggle switch straight from the battery to the pump. truck runs like a champ. is there a cut off or inertia switch somewhere that shuts down the electricity to the wiring when the truck rolls over?

First I would make everything back stock. then replace fuel pump relay, then fuel pump fuse to make it work. You could be over working the pump with more juice than it's made for. I would start there.

Fuel pump wiring diagram for 2001 chevy S10

The harness is a dealer part or a scrapyard part. The harness itself for jsut the fuel pump as it is set up by GM- the relay coil has one side hot +12 volts all the time, even when off. The ground side of the coil goes to the 3 bladed oil pressure switch which completes the ground circuit when there is oil pressure This is the tan wire.
There is a wire that comes from the ECU to prime the pump and keep it operating while initially starting. This is usually a white wire.

+12 volts usually is applied at all times at cavity 87 in the relay connector and the wire to the fuel pump is in 87A.

The harness from the dealership will list price at about 2000.00 US, and it will be the entire harness that includes that portion for the fuel pump.

If your pump is not energizing, or not staying energized, the oil pressure switch is likely at fault. By the same token it stays energized all the time unless relay is disconnected.

If you are going to add a switch, the easiest thing to do is gut out an old fuel pump relay and solder to the contact parts and clip the relay coil. This does bypass all auto shutoff. The wire will see some fair current so use 12 gauge or 10 gauge.and keep run as short as possible.

How do you reset a fuel pump in a 1998 chevy s10 truck 2.2 liter engine, 2 wheel drive? The truck hit a curb going pretty fast and now when you turn the key on the fuel pump does not come on. Is there an...

No, no reset for an S10. There would be a fuel pump relay under the hood in the fuse/relay block. And also a 10 or 15 amp fuse for the pump at this junction block as well.
Check the fuse, then find the tank electrical connector, pull it apart and find the gray wire -the fuel pump wire. Clip a test light lead to ground then put the tester probe into the gray wire terminal on the harness side of connector. Now have a helper turn the key to start and crank the engine over. The test light should light up if your electrical circuit is working. Before you drop the tank to investigate the fuel pump (it probably needs replacing), check if the ground for the pump is alright. Maybe when you hit the curb, you jarred loose the ground connection.

No power from the fuel pump relay to the fuel tank

MY 93 K1500 BLAZER DID THE SAME THING. I RAN A HOT WIRE FROM THE BATTERY INTO MY CAB TO A TOGGLE SWITCH . AND ANOTHER HOT WIRE TO THE POSITIVE WIRE OF THE FUEL PUMP ON THE OUT SIDE OF THE TANK. NOW YOU DON"T NEED TO GROUND THE FUEL PUMP OR TOGGLE SWITCH OUT. THE FUEL PUMP IS ALL READY GROUNDED. MAKE SURE TO PUT A 20 OR 30 AMP BREAKABLE FUSE IN BETWEEN THE WIRE FROM THE BATTERY AND TOGGLE SWITCH. I DID THIS ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO AND IT HAS WORKED GREAT EVERY SINCE. JAKE .B

Need a wiring diagram for a chevy s10. brake

your power starts at the brake light fuse, check with a test light, then proceed to stop light switch on brake pedal under dash, one wire will be hot when when you check it with your test light, the other won't be until you press down the brake pedal then the power flows through to the second wire,if no power to second wire replace switch,if you have power remove tail light bulbs and check for power in side socket.

The actual switching of tanks is performed by a solenoid operated valve that is controlled by the toggle switch. The valve or it's solenoid could be getting sticky and not switching over quickly. The switch should also change wire connections to the new tank fuel-level sensor. It's possible that the fuel pump is getting tired and has a problem picking up fuel from the new tank. I assume that the vehicle is using the stock engine-mounted fuel pump.

95 Silverado backfires thruogh throttlebody

It sounds very likely that it is going lean. Could be a bad Mass airflow sensor or a fuel pump, maybe plugged injectors. The first thing to do if you can get your hands on one, is to put a scan tool on it that reads live data and go up a long steady hill while you are watching the O2 sensor voltage. It should toggle back and forth across .5V, if it remains below .5V while you drive, then you know it's not getting enough fuel. If so, check the fuel pressure to spec. If it is good, then the pump is fine and you're chasing the other two.
