91 camry starts and shuts off when put in drive or reverse
I did a tune up on the car charging the spark plugs and distributer cap and car started but shut off after puttig in in drive or reverse. changed plugs again with a setting of .044 and put the old distributer cap and wires back on and car still shuts off once i put it in gear.
Re: 91 camry starts and shuts off when put in drive or...
I was an ASE master auto tech for 13yrs and have seen this problem before. It sounds like the idle air control valve on the intake manifold has stopped working and the idle speed is not being controlled(letting the engine idle too slow which causes a stall when put under a load such as putting it in gear). Try giving it a little throttle while putting it in gear if that works let off the throttle if it dies you will know the Idle Air controll is not working.

the spark plug wires can be confusing but a 4 cylinder is not that hard from the front of the engine being where the pulleys & belts are its 1,2,3,4 on the coil or distributor it can be in counter or clockwise rotation 1&3,2&4 or 1&4,2&3 likely its 1&3,2&4 hope you find this helpful
the mechanic may hav a plug wire on rong plug or the wires cud be old and they were pulled on--the distributer cap cud hav corrosion-chec it--inspect injector connections-mite hav been disturbed--fuel filter may be put in backwards--many techs dont test drive vehicles
sounds like the engine is misfiring .. often thats caused by arcing of aging ignition wiring and distributer cap ... you can change the following items:
spark plugs , distributer cap, rotor and ignition wiring .. that often fixes problems with that year car ..
Even with a new distributor cap you need to check for spark. Is there spark to the plugs? If you are getting fire, compression and fuel at the correct time - you should be starting. Did it stop running suddenly? Have you eliminated the timing belt? Does it turn over normally or faster than usual? Does it sound like it wants to start - if so it could be a restricted fuel supply.
hello i have a 1992 camry 4 cyl. i did a tune up on it(spark plugs & wires, air filter, fuel filter, dist. cap rotor) engine light is on now. It shuts off after 5 minutes of driving or idle. could it be a sensor? if so what type? thanks JC-
