The heater controlpanel in my 93 civic dx is not allowing me to turn it to heat. The knob acts like it is not activating in position and just slides right back to cool. Any ideas on how to fix this? It's getting pretty cold out now. =)

For clarification, it seems that you are getting air blown through the system but there is no temperature change, hot or cold?
Your heater control panel is cable operated with sliding knobs, not like the newer electronic controls with push buttons. It is a "mechanical" set up as opposed to an electrical situation.
Does the slider for the temperature control feel like it has tension and is moving mechanisms in the dash somewhere? If not, the cable, which has an "S" curve on the ends, may have slipped out of the arm either behind the heater control panel or at the AC box where the door is. Also, check the heater control valve on the firewall under the hood to see if the arm on the valve is moving properly when the temperature slider is moved.
When you push the "AC" button, do you hear fans under the hood/AC relays click on/idle drop? If not, you may have a separate AC issue, either very low or no freon. If the freon is just a little low, check the sight glass for the freon to see if you see bubbles when the AC comes on.
Hello, when the engine is running and warm grab the heater hoses coming out of the Firewall and see if they are warm or hot. Most likely they are hot and that will move your search inside the cab.
I have a 1999 F150 which had the same problem. Get a pair of pliers and a rag to cushion the bite and pull off your heater control knob. Now protecting the plastic shaft of the heater control with a rag, turn the control valve CLOCKwise. Now run the engine on your truck and see if the cab gets hot.
If you look at the backside of the knob you will see a half circle metal clip. This clip will slip around the knob if the knob is cracked. It is hard to reposition and glue because the plastic knob has molded shapes which act as stops for the controls. The new knob costs about $10. Salvage yards won't sell them without the whole heater unit.
Should the knob not solve your problem, you will need to look at the flaps and doors under the dash.
Are the radiator hoses from the engine to the firewall hot? If so, it's probably not the thermostat, it's probably either the heater core or the controls not allowing the heat to get in. Best advice I have (because I had to replace the heater core in my car last year) is to buy a Chilton repair manual for it. it walks you through everything. If it is a heater core, be prepared for a long job...
Try locating the heater hoses. Start with the vehicle cool and turn it on and wait till the engine temperature reaches the correct temperature. This should send fluid through the heater hoses. Feel the heater hoses for a change in temperature. If there is no change in heat after a while the problem is in your thermostat. If one heater hose is hot while the other is not than the problem is in the heater block. If both hoses are heating up then the problem is probably in the climate control knobs or wiring that controls the blend doors or may even be the blend doors are broke and are not opening correctly to allow heat into the vents. This could also be a problem if the ac does not get cool either.
You need to repair the heater core with a soldering gun.
If you do not have heat, or only have heat, IMHO it is most likey the AC/heater control unit. This is the part which has the AC/heat control buttons and knobs.
Easy Diagnosis: The easiest way to verify this is to turn on the radio, press and hold the power on/off button and press and hold the scan-up button for a second (full second). The word "A/C TEMP" should appear on the left of the display and a number from 0 to 16 on the right. I suspect yours will have the number 0 (or 16 if heating only problem) displayed no matter where you turn the temperature control knob. If this is the case you could turn the temp. knob to full heat and see if it goes to 16 after pushing down or to the right on the knob. In a working system, the number moves evenly in increments of 1, from 0 to 16 as you turn the temperature knob.
Easy Fix: I was able to take mine out and solder 3 loose connections to fix it.
The beginning steps are the same as for any radio removal procedure and check for loose connections.
There is a valve that allows heated water to flow through the heater core when you select heat on your controls. This valve should be located under the hood and one of your heater hoses should run to it. Your valve is stuck or failed for some reason. Check it out.
