A/T TEMP light on

I had a Montero Sport Suv when am driving the A/T Temp light we come on and when i stop and off the engine it goes off when i start the engine again and moves its re-appear after a while

Pull the temperature knob off and verify the thin 12mm nut is installed and tight behind it. I have seen several of these loosen up allowing the knob to turn but intermittently have no effect on temperature.

White smoke is antifreeze leak into cylinder.
Blue smoke is oil passing by rings or valve stems.
Black smoke could be gasoline problem or tune up problem.

P0128 OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)
What does that mean?

This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125

In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.

You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.

Possible Solutions

Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:

  • Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat

It is normal for the A/C air to warm up a little when stopped. Less airflow thru the condensor. It is normal for the engine temperature gage to rise up to about the 80% mark on its scale before the cooling fan kicks on. The gage will also show about the same reading on the first start of the day, until the thermostat opens.

If the fan(s) are not working properly the air and engine temperature will rise. If you have a belt driven clutch fan, the clutch may be worn out. All cooling fans kinda sound like miniture jet engines when its hot out, more so when the A/C is on. Replacing the clutch is all you can do for a belt driven fan. Electric fans are more complicated....
Check all main power electrical connections first.... Electric Fan(s) not working, Checking the fan(s), relay, fuse and engine temperature sensor's.
Verify that the fans work by unplugging them and run jumper wires to the fan(s) from the battery. If they run, your problem lies elsewhere. If either does not run, it's the motor.
Next thing to check is for power at the fan connectors. You have to be cautious doing this because the engine needs to be running and warm if not almost hot, and the A/C also needs to be on. (Both must be on and running for the duration of this checklist.) The A/C fan is on the passenger side and should come on almost the instant the A/C is turned on. It is also the secondary engine cooling fan and should cycle on and off in relation to engine temperature. Use a test light to probe the two wires on each fan. If you find power the fan motor(s) is/are probably bad. If there is no power to fans, roll up your sleeves!

The temperature switch is usually located above the oil filter. If the dash gage is working, its probably OK. Next is the Fan Control Temperature Sensor, located IN or CLOSE to the thermostat housing. You will find out if it is working later is this checklist. I just wanted you to know where it is. Next is the relays and fuse's. Usually located in the engine compartment on the passenger side power distribution box. You will need to remove anything over the cover to open it. If the fuses are OK, tap on the relays or pull them out and push back in. If the fans are still not running, pull a relay and probe the socket terminals for power. Two or three of the terminals should have power, usually criss-cross from each other. Two are hot battery power, and the third is the "signal" voltage which triggers the relay to send 12V battery power to the fan. This signal voltage comes from the sensor at the thermostat. If only two terminal's have power, then I would replace the thermostat sensor if not both sensors.

How do i fixed the Mitsubishi Montero 2000, when i run the engine in few minutes the engine will stop and A/T TEMP. appear on the dash board and won't start again.


A/T Temp Light, that is it warning you that your trans is overheating.
temp sensor is bad, your transmission cooler is bad, I would have it fixed. don't want to have to put a new tranny in there.

Did you replace the thermostat. Low coolant temp means the T stat is stuck open.

that could be several things such as lower intake gasket leak, blown head gasket... it could be something internal considering the loss of both compression and coolant. If you haven't found a solution to the problem yet... How many miles does the vehicle have? When was the last service done? was the engine light on prior?

I have a montero sport suv it jerks while driving it. it feels like its not getting any gas then it shoots off and when it reach 50 it starts to ****.


first check fuel filter change every 30,000 miles, if you have changed already, if your check engine light is on
get computer checked for codes, may be mass air flow sensor if you have one, or a distributor cap if it has one. Dirty fuel injectors as well.

The temp shot up in our 2000 Montero. Pulled over and discovered the upper radiator hose has come off. Let it cool, reattached, checked coolant/water and started to drive. in a few minutes, a knocking...


you may have overheated engine and not known it because if no water is present on temp sensor it will not show hot sounds like overheating of bearings in lower end possibly major engine repair may be needed

2001 Montero sport runs hot on the hiway, cools when I slow down


try replaceing your temp sencer. some time they are near the goose neck or on the block ok . and see if your fan sencer is working. good luck

Battery and brakes light coming on


i don't know about the temp gauge,but i have a 2000 montero sport,and when my brake light and battery light came on,my alternator was going out.another sign for the alternator is the radio going off every once in a while,and then coming back on.
