The transmission does have to come out along with the t-case.
There really is no short cut. The tranny has to come out to get to the pressure plate and clutch disk.
Make sure you do a complete job and replace the throughtout bearing also.

97 jeep Cherokee clutch will not depress to start the engine

Now you need to bleed the clutch at the clutch slave cylinder down on the transmission to restore the clutch.
Put a wrench on the bleed valve and open it, then lightly close it. Now have someone pump the clutch a couple of times to build pressure. Then while the clutch pedal is slowly pressed down open the bleed valve, then close valve as pedal gets to floor. Repeat this bleed process until a steady stream of brake fluid comes out the bleed valve. Then you should have a good clutch again.

My jeep won't start (1987 Jeep Cherokee)

Your starter needs a "makeover". try to clean or change the brushes in the starter.

a cheap and simple solution, is to make the cables on the starter longer, and attach them to a button in you car. If you choose that solution, you just have to turn on the ignition, and then push the button you have connected the starter cables to.
