the transmission filter is possible plugging up. When the car is off the fluid flows backwards through the filter into the transmission pan. Once the car is started, the fluid goes through the filter, if there is a lot of debris in the pan it will suck it up into the filter. then once the filter plugs up the fluid cant get to the clutches inside the transmission. thus it feels like neutral. similar to as if there was no fluid in the transmission. Replace the transmission filter.
you have to take out all the bolt on the trans pan ( start at one corner with a oil drain container under that corner because the more bolts you take out the fluid will come out faster (about 1-2 gallons total) ounce you have the pan off the just wiggle as you pull down on the old filter and push the new in (all the way in) replace your pan gasket and put bolts back it. refill the trans through the trans dip stick
My 1997 Caravan manual states that the trans fluid capacity is 8.5 quarts. However, in the transmission oil change section, it says to drop the pan, drain the oil, replace the filter and add 4 quarts of new fluid. This tells me that the torque converter is not draining so you are in fact, only changing "half" of the transmission fluid.
your filter is a flat square metal looking thing.it has a felt inside filter.when you go buy the new transmission filter and gasket.take out filter out of the box look at it it will give you an idea what filter look like.
Check Fluid Levels when car is warm and running in neutral. Next, change the pan gasket and filter and fluid. NEVER let a shop do a T TECH Transmission Service. That sucks it out backwards and destroys the filter and will kill the transmission. make sure you drop the pan and replace the gasket and filter and the fluid.
