Sounds to me like your thermostat is stuck closed. Cheap easy check is to take out the thermostat, run the engine until it warms up and check your temp readings. If they drop, may be a failed thermostat. To double check yourself. Boil some water and place the thermostat in the pot. Watch the stem valve in the center and see if it opens. If it does then maybe you have to look some other issues such as temperature sending sensor failure or water pump failure...

Sounds like the temperature sensor needs replacement. Guage failure is a probability, but more likely the temp sensor is a problem.

Coolant temp guage on my Nissan Altima will not go past halfway even when I know the engine is very hot. Changed out the temp sensor on the t-stat housing but did not help.

I would confirm your though with a Temp Gun and then if that is correct, you have either a Gauge or a Sensor deficiency

Where is the switch for guage hot cold located on the engine?

The coolant temp sensor should be on the intake near the upper radiator hose.

Temperature needle stays on the hot and doesnt move even when the car is cold?

YOur guage is faulty. Your will need to replace your guage if it stays in the hot position even when your car is off and your key is out of the ignition. If it only rises to hot when you turn the key to the run position, you have a wire between your guage and your temp sending unit that has been gounded out. Usually this happens when a person opens their hood to add oil or perform some minor maintenance on the engine and inadvertantly bumps the sensor or switch or wiring. This causes about 65% of these minor issues people incur, but if it does stay all the way up with your key out of the ignition switch, then you will need to replace your temp guage.

the fan will also cycle the same way. but the temp of the motor has to do with
the thermostat thats whare i would be looking the thermostat may be bad
when you pick up a new one test it if it says 180 deg. that is when its wide
open check it with a temp guage a house hold type in a pot of boiling water
on your stove i have found 1 out fo 6 would be good go figure.
now the censors. one wire tells you temp guage 2 wires tells you its a
switch for the fan while the motor is running use the same house hold

1988 BMW 318i temperature guage flickers between normal temp. through to max temp. Most of the time the guage is 3/4 to Hot. Main fan seems a little loose when hot - not tightening up. Coolant level OK no...

It could be the impellor wearing out on the water pump, though I have not heard of this issue in your make of car, I have seen it first hand in other makes. The thermostat may not be opening up all the way, flow restriction,. The coolant temperture sensor could be going out, and the gauge in the dash could be going out. You could have flow restrictions else where in the engine. Have you ever had the engine flushed? these are the things that I can think of that would make your engine run hotter than normal.

The temperature gauge is on HOT in a matter of moments even though it freezing outside we're thinking temperture guage

Thermostat not opening up, A thermostat is spring loaded and it will open up at the spec temp for what the thermostat calls for. Are you losing water, feel the hose to see if it is actually hot as the gauge states.

Temp guage read hot, volt guage reads low, and oil pressure guage tops out. Could this be a bad ground?

Possibly, i would check the sending unit and of course the wires that connect to the temp prob. They often become worn or even short out on other wires. I suspect that the gage is telling the truth and you have a blown head gasket. Check the oil for water. Check the water level and see if you are losing water. good luck
