A bad battery don't retain sufficient amperage even though it is displaying 12V when measured. Go down to a battery shop to have your battery checked for sufficient cold cranking amperes.

Check your battery cables to see if the cables themselves are corroded and also check the connections where they connect to the vehicle that they are clean
positivecable will connect at the starter and the negative will connect to the engine some where.
if this does not help then have your starter tested to see if it is dragging. as it could be the armature or the brushes in the starter.

It would start on a boost because this will be putting 24 volts to your system rather then 12 volts, forcing the extra voltage through the system, thus allowing it to get the power it needs to start.

the cables themselves corroding inside is rare but it does happen at times for some reason.

an example of why it starts with a boost is: if an electician only hooks up three wire for your clothes dryer it will dry a load of laundry but it will take a very long time, now on the other hand if he hooks up all 4 wires the load of laundry will dry twice as fast for the dryer is then getting full power.

I hope that this example and explanation helps answer your question.

That's a tricky one. Sounds as though there may be a loose connection / dodgy fuse or even a charging fault. I assume the battery lamp is not glowing at all when the engine is running.

1990 Nissan Sentra will not start

If your battery is fully charged then I'd say your starter is bad. Or the starter relay.
