Question about 2001 Volkswagen Beetle

Car Keeps Dying

My 2001 Volkswagen Beetle keeps dying. When you start the car it idles extremely rough. When you put the car in reverse, or drive, it dies. The car will do this four or five times before I'm actually able to gain speed. The car will always start, but will always die. Usually after the car has been driven around it will quit doing this. When the car is idling rough, even the headlights dim. HELP!

Also, the RPM is VERY low when the car in in park, or idling. I guess that's why it feels so rough.

My strarus idles rough in drive and stalls when icut the wheels all the way

I'd start by checking the idle air control valve, google it for your car and it will give you location, unplug it and the car should die, if not good possibility it's bad.

My 1998 Volkswagen Beetle keeps dying.

With the car running rough it could cause the harsh shift but if it is staying at 5000 rpms then the ****** is about to go out on you. The rough idle sounds like a vacuum leak. If you can keep the car running at idle listen for a sucking type sound. That would indicate where the vacuum leak is.

2001 Beetle keeps dying

this is correct pull the ecm out it is under the top of dash on drivers side the center piece pops forward then there are acouple torx screws that hold it down remove these the drivers side will pop off with a little force then the ecm is right there remove it actually take it apart and smell the circuit board if you see a black spot or it smells burnt you need an ecm but the mass meter and throttle could also cause this

think you may have caused the car to go into safe mode.you need someone to plug in a diagnostic computer to erase fault codes in the cars brain. hopefully that will sort it out!

it could be the fuel pump not working right. you can buy an electric one and put on there and it will tell you right away if your original fuel pump is dead
