Question about 1995 Mercury Cougar

95 xr7 If the timing is out by 360 then can I pull the distributer and #1 plug and set the timing manually by the air push from the cylinder when cranked? thanks for the insight so far!!

One of my employes took the distributer out of my 94 jeep cherokee 2wd automatic 4.0 inline 6-cylinder when replacing some parts in the distributer now we cant figure out the timing or what to set it at....

If you got the dist back in and the engine won't run, you are only one or two teeth off. To get it right, take out a couple of plugs, or get a big socket on the crank bolt and turn the engine over by hand, when the timing mark comes around, set it on it's mark. this should be TDC for No. 1 cylinder, which is the front most piston of any V shaped engine, or the front of any inline, now with the dist in the hole, and the cap on, follow the wire to the front cylinder, that is no. 1, set the pointer on the dist to no. 1. push it down, make sure it stays there, you should be all set. Hope this helps.

I am not sure where you are on this question, If you are standing there with no plugwires going into the distributer, that was from a proceedural error: Replace and deal with only one plug wire at a time and you never need to determine were #1 plug is...

So, if you are there and no wires to the dist, here is what to do:
Pull #1 spark plug.
Pull dist cap (often a distributer will have been altered and #1 not located as indicated in the book) this method covers that.
So, you need to ground or disconnect the coil wire coil to center of distributer.

you need a push button starter, or assistant.....

You are doing two things, observing the direction that the rotor turns, so after you locate #1, the other wires follow in that same rotational direction.

So, you stick your finger over the #1 plug hole, you need to determine when it is on teh compression stroke...(air comes rushing out)...
this will take several revolutions to accomplish, but you need to rotate the engine over and STOP at or near the Top dead center of #1. Accuracy not huge important, be close.

Now look at the rotor, and it will be pointing to the correct position if the #1 cylinder.

Firing order from that point is often located on engine sticker on radiator support, and often in raised letters somewhere on the block, head or manifolds.

1-5-3-6-2-4 is common.

It sounds like this needs a hall affects plate in the distributer, this will need to pull the distributer remove the gear end , slide the shaft out , remove the plate ,, install the new plate put distributer back together install back into motor, set timing hot,

Missing distributer, How do I install another one?

drive it to a shop and have them do it. What will happen is you wont be able to position it correctly without a data scanner. You don't set timing on these like an old truck. You need to cam sync it which requires a scanner to show postion and then you rev the engine while checking the position which ideally should be at zero plus or minus 2. Just hope this is your problem before you go to this expense to replace the distributor. If you have a MIS i'm doubting its the distributor if you already replaced the cap and rotor.

Just replaced engine in my 97 its a vortec brought it to tdc put in distributar it turns over and tries to start but wont i turn it just a little it acts better but i cant move it far enough

take the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder and turn the engine by hand until the piston is at the top dead center of its stroke (put a screw driver in the hole and you should be able to tell when its all the way up). now pull the cap off the distributer the rotor should be pointing at the #1 cylinder wire. if not then the distributer is in the wrong possition. remove the distributer and point the rotor in the correct possition(#1 cylinder) and place the distributer back in.also if this is a used engine replace the cap,rotor plugs and wires.the truck should start. Hope this helps you out.

Just put new timing kit on 95 gmc sonoma 2.2liter and lined marks up. truck still wont start. do i need to put number 1 cylinder on tdc before i start the truck. when trying to start it backfired a little.

click the ignition so #1 cylinder is at top dead center then pull youre distributer cap off make sure the rotor is pointing towards # 1 cylinder if not you re timing is 180 deg off pull the distributer out a little and turn the rotor to # 1 cyl you probaly dont have the timing marks lined up correct if the timing is off it will back fire either out the air filter or exhaulst ..

Timing Problem??

pull # 1 plug out,put screwdriver in cylinder head and see what mark you need to use, also on vortex there is a dot on the distributer gear that must be lined up with a lateral on the distributer ,so when it drops in it will be on # 1 firing cylinder

I replaced the head gaskets and put back together set the timing manually with compression stroke at #1 cylinder car wont start and blows air out of intake connection to air filter? what did I screw up?...

Serious trouble. Distribution belt problem.
Valves opening at wrong interval.
You forgot to line up the timer marks.

Read a basic book next time.
Did you knock the cylinderhead of by leaving one bolt behind and turning it off or did you forget that one to.
Tightening fromm the middle towards the end.
Head always to be regrinded until mininimum because of warp?
Nice to grind in valve seats in as well then. And a few other things.
