Could someone please tell me how I can put the rearview mirror back on the windshield of my 96 Cavalier convertible? It just fell off while I was at the vets with my cat. The car only has 22,000 miles on it; I guess the glue dried up because it wasn't bumped. It has the wire for the front reading lamps attached and still working. I noticed a metal piece on the back of the mirror's stem... anyhow, help, please! Tracy
There is a screw that holds that piece of metal in place. take the screw out and remove the piece of metal then look at a local hardware or automotive store and ask for the windshield adhesive. and fallow that instructions pay close attention to the temperature to be applied at and the Harding or drying time.

windshield's are made of laminated glass so they shatter into tiny pieces when in an accident so do not cut as bad , the rearview mirror has pulled the first layer of laminate away , the windshield will be weakened by this and could shatter at any time , particulary over rough/bumpy ground, it cannot be repaired so you will need to replace the shield , as for who designed the mirror he wasn't very clever !
Hiya...ALL factory-installed rearview mirrors are installed with different wires due to options.
About 6 different rearview mirrors are installed with those options such as On-Star, light, compass, and those features which use different wires....THIS CANNOT be modified with different rearview mirror....**for example, the Equinox owner attempt to pull out a factory-installed base rearview mirror and put in different one that has compass/temperature built into the rearview mirror**
However, the wires are located inside the front headliner which requires removing the sunvisor (and possible removal of interior plastic trim part at the left/right ends of the windshield) prior to pull the headliner down, and a small metal philips or torx screw is used to secure the rearview mirror onto the bracket glued to the windshield.
The best solution is to leave the original factory-installed rearview mirror in place.
