Question about 1998 Jaguar XJ8L

Wont start, no faults on ecu,keeps flooding,

Parked car in garage, next day wont start, showing 17v plus on batterrie,no faults come up on dyno scan,took plugs out wet,(petrol) dried them put them back next day. tried again still will not start, turns over.when i turn ignition key theres a wurring under bonnet which is continuous. could it be a fuel pump relay not shutting off, and flooding the engine,

    super flooding, was the problem, the cold start, stuck on, so i removed the plugs squirted oil down each bore,pulled out the fuel pump relay,turned it over a few times, then put the relay back replaced the plugs, cranked it over and voila thankyou thedonne most helpfull.

    02 XJ-8 4.0L, turns over, seems flodded. had same problem 1 year ago when weather turned cold. Will waiting a day help?

Sounds like the old nikasil problem.Remove all of the spark plugs and squirt oil down each bore,replace plugs and she should fire up.

    The 02 xj8 should have steel liners and not nikasil coated ones.It would be prudent to remove and clean plugs.When you start the car dont touch the accelerator while the engine is cranking, if by chance you do flood the engine leave it alone for an hour or two then push the accelerator to the floor while starting. This stops fuel being pumped into the engine and any existing fuel should fire, once this has happened again leave the gas alone until she fires up

Both the 3.2 and 4.0 V8 engines with steel liners, post '02 suffer
cold re-start flooding and Jaguar don't have a fix and will not recognisethe problem,
try asking a main dealer!

My own '04 3.2 would never fail to start from ice cold but if it was switched off
within 30 seconds, or so, a normal restart was impossible. Over fueling was the
cause and, whilst not a solution, a way around the problem is to floor the
accelerator (cutting off all injectors) and crank until it restarts. A word of caution:
Make sure your battery is in good shape and don't over heat the starter motor for cranking for more than 15 seconds, with a 30 second break. As soon as a refire is noted, back off the accelerator and 'nurse' the engine into life.

It amazes me that a luxury car like this can have such a fault and yet no fix!

You need to run an engine control module scan for fault codes Known as an OBD2 fault code test.. Autozone and others do this for free. If no fault show then hook up a test fuel gage the next time it stalls and see if maybe the fuel pump is failing.

tool late now.
you'd need to drive with scan tool attached then see what code
set (DTC) at failure.
can be lots of things.
bad fuel, partial clogged filter.
injector clogs. and other sensors errors.
and others, this is common rail injection system, right?
get a scan tool, and have it always ready. for fails.

Does the new battery turn the motor over? Sounds like bad/dirty cable connections...

Megan coupe petrol 2001. the car went sluggish missing a bit as if plug was down. plus could smell engine. got it home . next day it started ok . after that wont start now. turns over but wont fire in. can...


Could be a whole gambit of problems

1) Check the HT system is good, contacts clean, good spark on the plugs.
2) Check the water temperature sensor.
3) Check the air filter isn't clogged.

hi, the cylinders are dry of petrol fumes and you need a (good battery), if all the mehanical parts (working fuel pump and clean fuel filter) o.k. and the spark plugs are clean and the (spark plug timming leads) are correct and points are set and the (ignition coil) is o.k. this engine should start. (if not) take off the air filter and check it is clean, leve the air filter off and put a very small amount (egg cup full) of clean petrol into port the carberreter (it will not start straight away because the plugs may be wet) or wrong (timming leads) if it splutters problebly not enough petrol or ignition faults (electrical points contacts dirty) all cars need metered fuel and air to run. wish you luck gerry

Scanning the onboard computer will probably reveal one or more problems. Probably the fastest way to resolve your issues.
If you have a chain auto parts store in your area, they will often scan it free of charge.

Have a 03 ion went thru high water it died towed home home took out sparck plugs crancked water shot out oiled cly cleaned plugs drying out air filter still wont start any answeres


Drain all the oil and put on new clean, also repl the oil filter.
Your coil pack may also still be wet-- , mark your spark plug wires and the coils and remove them. Make sure the coils are dry the spark pulg wires ends are dry. Also the plug or the main harness to the coil pac may be wet still, pull the plug and dry that, use an old hair drier or just let it sit a day longer.
