Question about 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser
Have a weird problem that has us stumped. After the car has been closed up overnight, when you open the door in the morning the strong diesel smell could knock you over before starting up the engine. Don't seem to notice when the car is running with the windows up. Cannot see or feel any dampness and have not spilt any diesel within the car. Seems to be getting worse, and is not an exhaust smell but straight diesel. My daughter had a damp patch on her jeans after kneeling on the floor of the rear behind the drivers seat, but the carpet did not appear damp and after lifting the carpet all the padding was dry and did not smell. It's a mystery that's driving us crazy. No drips or leaks under the car. Please help.
Since you didnt notice any change in the performance of your engine, ill presume there's nothing wrong with your fuel injectors.
look for moisture around your gas tank cap, the hose and clamps going down the tank, around the fuel gauge sending unit of your tank. have your fuel line checked from the tank to your fuel injection pump, give particular importance around the connections of your fuel filter, fuel pump, and the return hose from your fuel injection going back to your tank.
Diesel do emit strong hazardous odors that may stick on carpets inside your car.

Tips for a great answer:

Presuming it is swinging (starter turning engine) and the
glow plugs are working well and diesel is clean, the other alternatives are a
drop in fuel pressure through the injectors which is necessary to ignite the
diesel, or engine compression. If the compression is too low the diesel will
not ignite. Test the injectors and
compression across al cylinders. Being a turbo the compression si already lowered and the slightest drop will have an effect. Happy hunting.
