I have recently bought a 2002 PT Cruiser with 128K miles. Is there any way to determine if the timing belt has been replaced?

Replace the belt at 100k with a new water pump pulley and tensioner. It would not be a bad idea while u r in there to replace the center motor mount. When the mount fails it is a pricey fix not a bad Idea to replace it since you have to remove it to do the belt.

SOURCE: how do you put on a timing belt for a 2002 pt

hi from uk could you please verify ? you intend to diy cambelt change ? also has belt been removed already ? or has belt failed/broken ? the belt change is not too difficult to change/renew and is advisable to renew belt and tensioner and the water pump too as it is driven by c/belt to eliminate having to strip down again in near future due to possible pump faiure/leaking ? belt replacement is approx120'000miles or 8 years service ? however if belt has failed ?? then as this engine is what is known as interferance this means there will be piston/s to valves contact resulting in possible valves damage/bent ? the renewal of c/belt etc should take approx 3 hrs if you are confident/tooled and would save $$$$

My pt cruiser is 2001 has done 92000 klm wnen do i do a timing belt change

I would recommend replacing the timing belt and 60,000 miles and most definitely at 90,000, you most definitely won't hurt anything to go ahead and replace it now.

Overheating engine

Check your oil dipstick for coolant, or a mucky substance. Your symptoms sound like a blown head gasket.

Timing belt

A dealer told my son in law to change the timing belt at least once before it reached 80000 miles. I would probably change it at 60, maybe 70.
