Question about 1986 Honda Prelude

Speedometer Works Sporadically on 5 spd.Manual 2.0SI-1986 Prelude

My speedometer works only when it takes a mind too. There is no problem with the mileage indicator or the tach, but the speedometer only works sporadically, sometimes will not work for weeks and then it will start working for a few minutes and quits again. I have replaced the speedometer cable but I still have the same problem. Aside from a new speedometer head....which costs more than the car is there any other solution?

I also think its a lube problem from the cable too, so should I take it out and Re_lube the damn thing ? N with what kind of lubrication you think is best 4 it ? I really dont want to get rid of the car, even though I do owned 2 cars. My other car is an Acura, The 86 Honda Prelude SI believed or not I bought it right after I graduated high school in 1989. Until today everything on that car still function GOOD still runs, except for that damn Speedometer cable. I luv this prelude cause its treat me good, I used mostly origional Honda parts, replaces my self, I m a Machinist 12 yrs experience and also a Mechanic with 11 yrs experi, So I do know what I m doin".
I do agree with you Dammadmax_78 about the defect on the speedometer cable that the dealer does't reconize it. Do you believe it would take the dealer the whole day to replace an alternator, with all the tools and lift that they got. Me, I do it at home in less than an hour ok. Anyway thanks 4 the Tips, I think I'm gonna take it out N put some light oil in it instead of grease. Cause after years n years grease does dry up and clog it.

Replace speedometer cable on 1986 Honda Prelude

If just the inner part is broken, remove both ends of cable, pull out broken parts. Buy a universal repair kit at parts store and follow instructions that come with.

A bouncing speedometer is usually the sign that the gear at the transmission end is worn out.

Owners manual

the odometer part of the speedometer has more than likely broken, or is just work out. you can't replace just that part of it either, you'll need to look around or search google for a replacement speedometer. bear in mind that some laws come into play when replacing the speedometer / odometer on a vehicle as well.

1994 honda prelude vtec speedometer tach problem

Possible speed sensor. I know the speed sensors are a problem with hondas. A new speed sensor is about $200 and can be easily replaced. It bolts to the top of the transmission on the firewall side. Do NOT buy an e-bay one. They are only about $30 but are junk

The tachometer on my 92 Honda Prelude Si works but the factory speedometer isn't whatsoever.

Its probably your speed sensor mounted on the back side of your transmission on top of the final drive gear. Its the sensor/plug located just under the shift linkage. Make sure its bolted down tight and check for any loose connections.

Speedometer works sporadically

It sounds as if liquid got into the instrument cluster and the speedometer gauge might have some rust on the spring. Check to see if any other gauge is sticking sometimes.

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 with a 5 spd. manual transmission. The Speedometer quit working. The oil pressure gauge and stuff works but the speedo does not. Could this be a speed sensor problem?

yes the speed sensor on the top of the diferencial controls the speedometer, milage, and the ABS breaking system. that light should be on as well, I had the same problem for about a year until I got myself a diagnostic computer, plugged it in and there I got all my codes.
