The Clock/Date light on my 1998 328i has gone dark. When I called the dealer, they said I had to replace the whole computer for $1,400. It's hard to justify the funds for a car that old, although the car itself is in mint condition with 70,000 miles.
Is it possible to buy used computers? Are there car mechanics that can install them outside of the BMW dealerships? Could this be as simple as a fuse problem?

What you have is a bad "clock spring" That is a flat ribbon connector that goes from the steering wheel to the steering column. FREE. I think they still will do it for free. Call your local Chrysler dealer and give the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number ) to the service person and set up an appointment. (They will tell you that you might have to pay for the diagnosics if that isent it but I'd bet a dollar to a dognut thats it.
Good Luck and God Bless
Hi, behind your climate control panel is something called the Electronic Timing and Control Module (ETACM). This is like a computer for the chassis. All of the troubles you mention are tied into the ETACM. If you could find a used module at a salvage yard, it may solve your problems at a reasonable cost. To troubleshoot the problem will be very difficult and must be left to the dealer, which could be expensive. Just the same, I have included a few of the wiring diagrams in case you have a good multimeter and would like to try troubleshooting.
most of the time there is another fuse that shares another function such as the clock light so you cant see it, it might be on but not light up to see it, go through all the fuses and check if anything else is not working ie interior light etc. if all fails check the bulb in clock then get a multi meter to check for a power supply to the clock. im sure another fuse some where
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE WHOLE INSTRUMENT PANEL WENT OFF NO RPM, NO TEMP, NO CLOCK, NO ENGINE LIGHT, OR ANY OTHER WARNING LIGHTS, ONLY THE TURNING SIGNALS AND THE BATTERY LIGHT WORKED. SEAT BELTS AND WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING. MY RADIO HAS BEEN INSTALLED FOR OVER 4 MONTHS SO I REALLY DOUBT IT IS THE RADIO. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT IT COULD BE PLEASE LET IT BE KNOWN. ALL FUSES ARE GOOD ALSO.
