Just last week went into to get a smog check because my registration required the check and didn’t pass the test. Error codes were p0441- EVAP Ctrl incorrect purge flow p0442- Evap Ctrl System Small Leak Detected p0446 Evap vent control Malfunction I was hoping to find out if anyone had these error codes together. I also wanted to know if error code p0442 is saying it is detecting the leak. Would the leak cause the canister or vent control to malfunction? I scheduled a smoke test that is already going to cost me $200 to figure out where the leak is. Then to fix p0441 and p0446 I am getting the impression that I need some canister to be replaced which the mechanic told me that it will cost $500 for the part without the labor cost. Also the parts can only be bought from the dealer no aftermarket. My budget is really thin and was hoping to get a better understanding of how much everything is going to cost? I understand it is really hard to diagnose the problems because it may be the result of many variables but was wanting know if anyone had these combination of errors all together. Also wanted to include that I bought this vehicle from a Toyota dealership back in 2006 and when I purchase the vehicle it was listed as certified used vehicle. I was hoping to find out if the emission repairs are still covered under warranty? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
Some test should be about $25 and take about ten minutes once the car is up on the lift, after all it is just a diagnostic test to see if there any leaks. The car should be on the lift to check the EVAP piping all the way back to the tank. It is unlikely that the charcoal canister will need changing, they generally last longer than the car as they rarely wear out. The charcoal canister and the whole EVAP system merely absorbs fuel vapours rising of the fuel in the tank. When your engine is warmed up and doing more than 2,500 revs the EVAP purge and vent valves open to allow outside air to be drawn in through the canister to carry the small amount of trapped fuel vapour into the engine to be consumed as part of the normal fuel air mix. The computer normally commands the EVAP system to open and close the purge/vent valves check as part of an inbuilt leak detection protocol and has seen an anomaly, possibly the vent valve not closing properly. Once the nature of the leak is diagnosed it is matter of fixing it and it should not be an expensive or time consuming job. Take the car to other mechanics and get their opinion and guesstimates. Put it like this "would you smoke test my EVAP, fix the leak and clear the diagnostic trouble codes from my computer for $200 including taxes?" If the answer is no then ask how close they can get to this price.

TRY REPLACING THE GAS CAP IF THE SEAL AROUND IT IS NOT SEALING IT CAN CAUSE THIS

check the pcv hose at the back of the intake manifold it often leaks and will cause several idle problems

These codes are all for the Evaporative Emissions System.
P0440- Evaporative emissions system fault- just saying there's something wrong with the system.
P0441- Evaporative emissions system- Incorrect purge flow- saying that the system isn't purging the raw fuel vapors (hydrocarbons- HC) as well as it should.
P0446- Evaporative emissions system- Control valve circuit low- there is a valve, usually located on the charcoal canister at the rear of the vehicle, that opens to allow fresh air to enter the evaporative emissions system as the engine vacuum purges the fuel vapors from the charcoal canister and closes when purge is not needed to prevent leakage of those fuel vapors to the atmosphere (HC is a greenhouse gas and is regulated as such by the fed gov't).
Given that you have the incorrect purge flow code and the control valve code together, my bet is that the vent control valve has failed (causing the P0446) and is not opening to allow fresh air into the system to displace the air from within the system that is being pulled to the engine. Since you have no fresh air entering the system, the engine will pull a vacuum on the system instead of the vapors "flowing" into the engine (causing the P0441).
I hope that this is helpful to you!!!

Test the purge valve and the vent valve for leaks. This can only be done with a Tech 2 and or a vacuum pump.
SOURCE: P0440, P0441, P0446
Error code P0446 is an Evaporative Control System vent control
malfunction. DTCs P0441 and P0446 are recorded by the ECM when
evaporative emissions leak from the certain components, or when there
is a malfunction in either the VSV for EVAP, the VSV for
pressure switching valve, or in the vapor pressure sensor itself.
Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid.
Repair open in PCM purge command circuit.
Replace purge Solenoid.
Replace vacuum switch.
Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or soleniod.
Repair resistance in purge connector.
Replace PCM.
for p0442
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses.
