Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

Electrical sytem? inconsistently shuts car down

I have a 1994 Grand Prix . The engine shuts off when going down the road . It seems to happen mostly when all lights are on dash and head lights. computer, starter and battery have all been replaced. Cleaned off all connectors in both fuse boxes under hood. Door locks won't release when turning key off. The radio also comes on by itself when the key is not in ignition. and will shut back off when moving steering wheel there are also radio controls in the steering wheel. I'm thinking it's something electrical.

These engines have a sensor known as the Crankshaft position sensor, they are most of the time the part that causes these problems, it is located on the front of the engine, it gets it's signal from the crank pulley/harmonic balancer, if it goes open when hot the engine dies, when the sensor cools back down the eng will restart.

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

2002 Grand Prix cuts out while driving on slight incline and sometimes on the flat roads

Hello,

I want to assist you, but I need more information first. When this happens does the check engine come on before the car shuts down and if so what are the codes stored?

My car keeps stopping as I'm driving, could this be the Cadalic Converter

Most of the time when your converter starts to get clogged up when you push the gas pedal your engine will "Bog' like it has no power. if you are just cruising down the road at it is cutting off I think you may be looking at another problem. Most likely electrical but don't quote me on that but that is where I would start. Good luck

1994 pontiac grand prix, starts up and runs fine until it warms up, about 4-5 min, then dies and will not start until cool, has new plugs and new fuel filter

the mass air flow sensor will cause this. you can remove it and spray it with electrical cleaner or maf sensor spray. you can buy at any auto parts store. follow directions on can for maf sensor spray. this sensor is very sensitive to dirt and debris. and also make sure air filter is clean and hose from filter is free from dirt.

Not necessarily. It could be the cat, but also could be the O2 sensor and/or mass airflow sensor. I would check those first as they're a lot cheaper than a new cat.
