Have them replace the entire axle with a rebuilt for aound $70-100 cost.  After they buy the CV and the boot kit, you will be close to that amount ... and they will still have to get the joint off the boot on, the cv on and attach the boot to the joint and shaft ... sometimes these boot kits don't fit right .. and they haven't done many and may not realize it doesn't fit right!

BTW Put aside some money or the other side CV since it may go in the near future/  And by all means, if it's boot is cracked, have them clean out the joint with parts cleaner (basically kerosene), regrease the joint, and install a new boot, you may add 20=30K miles to that CV's life.

    good luck!

The cv is probably shot. Just have it replaced.Once the boot is broken, the grease slings out the bearings inside dry out and will bind up and break.

Hello, There are a lot of moving parts in the front end. You may have a bad CV joint which is on the shaft that turns the front wheels. Each side has a similar part. There are also hub bearings which are in the hub and the hub is turned by the CV joint shaft.

The CV joint can break without tearing the rubber cover on the shaft, but if someone looks under the car at the CV shaft and sees oil or grease or a torn rubber cover on the right side CV shaft; it will confirm the diagnosis.

Once this part breaks the car will not move anymore. A broken CV joint can cause other parts to fail like the hub bearings. You can call around and price the repair or if you know someone who can do the work, price the parts.

If the shaft needs to be removed, it is behind several parts which will need to be removed first.

One of your CV joints are bad, inspect which CV joint needs to be replaced. Roll your windows down and make tight right and left corners in an empty parking lot slowly and listen for the clicking noise. If it's coming from the passenger side window or the drivers side window, which ever side the noise is coming from is the side that the CV joint has failed and will need to be replaced.
Thank you for using FIxya and replacing the front wheel bearing improperly buy hammering the CV joint out instead of using a wheel bearing puller will cause damage to the CV joint as to what you have described. Good luck and keep us posted.

CV halfshaft will run you $75 at local autoparts store. Shop labor varies from shop to shop as well as their expertise.
The brake caliper has to be pulled, lower shock bolt removed, upper and lower ball joint seperated (book will say only one but it is not true) and steering knuckle and axle nut removed. CV joint simply unbolts at differential output flange.

Clicking or grinding in front passenger side when you turn left

Best guess would be that your CV joints need to be replaced.Mainly your passinger side, but on a car 15 years old would consider doing both sides.Constant velocity joint are like your U-joins in front wheel drive cars. You can google CV joint to see what I am talking about.Well hope this helps, and good luck.

He is quite right in what he says but he's way over the top in price Get some more quotes Suspension shops good place to go and no your wheels won't fall off but you'll end up having to replace your cv joints which will cost. ie: new boots = $ 30 ea cv joints $200 ea
