Question about 1997 Mazda 626

2 Answers

Transmission slipping I have a 1997 Mazda 626 with an automatic transmission. At times, the car feels as though it is going to stall, it is not shifting at the rpm's it used to shift at. This is not constant but it seems to be happening more & more frequently which makes me think the problem is getting worse. I did experience one time when I could not put it into reverse (that only happened once). I took it to a mechanic who tells me that until it does it all the time, he does not have an answer. Please help! I work nights and fear being stranded. Thanks

I have the exact car and the exact problem up until yesterday. As of yesterday my transmission slips all the time. Only by starting and stopping the car does move but only for a few feet. We are not sure if the transmission is shot or something serviceable?

I have taken my 1997 Madza back to the transmission shop, after having it rebuilt 6 months ago at the cost of 2,000 dollars, and still the transmission is slipping. I was told the price to redo the transmission is another 1,200.00 dollars, but put in mind I have already spend 1,800.00 pior to this to have it rebuilt. I think this model car's transmission is just doomed for failer no matter what. I tired of spending with no good results. How about You?

I have th same car and had the same problem. I went ahead and had the transmission rebuilt. Even after I did this it still did it. So I went and had the RPM indicator changed and ithas not done it since. Till this day I don't now if I needed that transmission rebuilt of just the little tiny RPM indicator but I haven't had the problem since

Have you checked your transmission fluid? Be sure to read the owner's manual for the correct way to check this fluid.

How do i set timing on 1997 mazda 626 2.0 liter automatic?

This engine is one of the more straightforward types to time as no unusual or special procedures are required and the belt tension is automatically set by a spring. Because the alignment marks are all available at the front no special holding or setting tools are needed.

The belt replacement and timing procedure will be completely intuitive to any competent person, however it is an interference engine and getting it wrong is likely to cause expensive engine damage.

In this case I feel I must make the comment if you need to ask how to do the job you probably shouldn't be attempting it and make the suggestion you obtain a repair manual for your car or pay someone to do it for you this time so you can observe.

Ihave a 1997 mazda protege and after having it for a week I noticed the transmission will slip when going into 3rd gear (automatic transsion) the fuid is brown and I was worried about really messing things...

.One of the most common causes of a slipping transmission is a low automatic transmission fluid level, also a dirty and/or clogged automatic transmission filter can impede the normal flow of automatic transmission fluid throughout an automatic transmission and cause the transmission to slip. Adequate, unobstructed transmission fluid flow is necessary for the optimal operation and function of an automatic transmission, including the function of the transmission bands and gears, two transmission components that routinely cause transmission slippage.Another cause would be faulty torque converter action and maladjusted transmission band.

I believe your transmission may be shot, Check your dipstick level to make sure your fluid level is full. If it is than your transmission may need a overhaul.

My mazda 626 1997 2.5 v6 stalls out every time i take out oil dip stick

I discovered that removing the dip stick also breaks the vacuum and causes the engine to run really rough. I'm not surprised to hear you get stalls. don't worry too much, just check your oil when the engine is off.!

I had the same problem with my dodge neon. Its your transmission slipping. My car had to have all the transmission flushed and it helped alot, but the longer you let it go, the damage could be permanent.

Check you transmission fluid level and if it's not your transmission, I'm thinking that your brake shoe lineing in the rear brakes may have separated and is jamming up aginst the drums when your trying to back up. Sorry can't halp you with any more, good luck and start with that and hope it help's.

Tramission automatic mazda 626 97

Not a solution, but definitely bad news.

Unfortunately, your symptoms are all too typical of 1997 626's with the automatic transmission, especially those with the V6 engines. Owners have been reporting OD lights flashing and hard shifting as early as 20,000 miles, and total transmission failure as early as 40,000-60,000.

There are also many reports of owners having the transmissions rebuilt only to have them fail again in 12,000 to 20,000 miles.

This transmission, actually a Ford CD4E, was installed in many mid to late 90's Mazda's. NHTSA has over two hundred complaints on the 1997 626 alone.

Conversely, Mazda used a 5 speed manual transmission of their own design in these same model year 626's, and it is not unusual for them to go well beyond 200,000 miles without so much as a hiccup.

There are many Mazda forums out there over the years where people have attempted to launch a class-action lawsuit against Mazda to force them to announce a recall for the automatic transmission.

Mazda North America Operations claims that there were never enough complaints lodged with them to justify a recall. It appears they managed to avoid recall by instructing their delears to tell customers these symptoms were "typical of Mazda transmissions" and to document these concerns as complaints.

Unfortunately, once you start experiencing the type of problems you have, you can only expect it to get worse. If it's any consolation, it's nothing that you have done to the car, or could have been prevented, its poor design and ECM programming. Don't let a dealer or transmission shop try to tell you differently.

Try Googling, "1997 Mazda Transmission Complaints", and you'll get sick over the number of hits you get.
