Question about 1990 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

Engine swap lookin for a 5.9 computer #

I have a 1990 Dodge Ram Power W/100 4x4 Pick up, started out as a 5.2 V-8 with 518 auto trans over-drive non-lock up. Truck is still good runner, but engine wore out, so I replaced the 5.2 V-8 (318) TBI with a 1990 5.9 (360) TBI Engine. I changed all sensors and replaced torque converter, the truck runs ok with 5.2 Computer, but I would rather have the 5.9 ECM So that it will runs its best. I have no # to go by....I have recieved 4 computers from a independent rebuilder, and everyone they sent me wouldn't even start the truck. I have been around mopars all my life, this truck is pushing my buttons. Can anyone help? Am I missing something? I was told by a mopar used auto parts store that I could only use a computer from a 1990 5.9 and it had to come out of a Ram Power pick up or a Ramcharger, and it had to be 4x4 and auto trans? Any suggestions? Thanks for this sight at least I feel better knowing someone might have run into the same problem. Mopar For Ever ! Paul

The dealer told me that they couldnt use the vin # to get the right computer because it would refer me to the 318 computer, I asked if i changed the "y" meaning 318 in my vin#, to a "z" meaning 360, after i tol them that, they said they truck was to old to do that. Going by the vin nuber I mean. They said they needed a Computer # to go by. How would they help someone else if the truck they had didn't have a computer , or the words and numbers were wore away. So if I knew someone that had this truck I would offer them a few bucks to give the correct computer # for my truck. Of course it would have to be almost the same as mine, with the same options. Some of the guys now days only know what the computer tells them. And they dont really want to give you any help I have found unless you are bring the truck to them for a repair job. At least where I come from.

Maybe in a small town somewhere you can get some really good help, but around here forget it.

If you told a good dealer parts person what you where trying to do they could get the correct calibration processor for you, you are dealing with a bunch of by the book parts people, can't think outside the box.

Is 7 quarts of transmission fluid too much for an 05 ram 5.7 hemi engine?

Is your trans an auto trans? If so, you should have the 45rfe trans which would take 5-7 quarts to refill after a filter change.

Use only Chrysler or Valvoline ATF+4 fluid.

1990 fuel injection engine into an 86 Z28

you can get an "engin swap wiring harness" from jegs or summitt that would require a little extra work on the wiring on the inside of the vehicle, however if you have the original wiring harness for the 90 engine, there is a plug on the inside of the right(pass) fender of the camaro that connects the internal wiring to the external. (plus the fuse block connector under the hood on the firewall on the driver's side) as far as the trans. i did the same thing with mine and kept the 5 sp, the only real problem is that i don't have back up lights.
