Remove and replace back brake pads

How do push caliper piston back in to install new pads on rear of 99 new beetle wasnt quite sure if u pushed back in with c clamp or if there was something different please give me steps to do it properly thank you bob

This has a hand brake which moves out as the brake wears. It looks like it needs a spanner wrench to get across the id it push in with C-clamp?

I just use a C clamp, always worked for me, also a jumbo set of channel lock pliers works great.

Never did beetle brakes, but many others, always used a big 'C' clamp. It will help to open the bleeder on that wheel when you compress the clamp. countrycurt0

Replace rear brake discs and pads


Depending on vehicle. Find level ground and park there. Put chocks in front and behind wheels not being lifted. Loosen lugs, jack up vehicle, set jack stands, lower vehicle on jack stands, remove lugs and wheel. Open hood remove brake fluid cap. Remove two bolts holding caliper, pull caliper off rotor disc and bracket, remove pads, place a used pad in front of caliper piston, use a c clamp to push caliper piston in caliper, remove c clamp and old pad, hang caliper up, remove 2 bolts holding caliper bracket, remove bracket, remove rotor, install new rotor, install caliper bracket, install new pads, install caliper, repeat this on other side, put cap back on brake fluid tank, remove bleeder fittings and keep pressing brake pedal until an even flow of brake fluid sprays out. Install bleeder fitting. Make sure brake fluid doesnt get on paint and is contained and disposed of correctly, top off fluid install wheels and raise car up remove jack stands, lower car and break in new pads

Need to perform rear brake pad change on 2006 Volvo V70 AWD 2,5T wagon


brakes are brakes, push in , turn in, or two piece calipers. remove wheel , remove two bolts that hold caliper in place, remove replace pads if rotors look good if not remove caliper retainer and rotor replace or have resurfaced at local part store with service. if push in piston push in with c-clamp or piston tool, if turn in will be solid on top with slots for tool to turn in turn to right, tool can be gotten at parts store, if two piece take apart and put back then bleed brakes.

How do i get the calippers of to get old pads out and new ones in


front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also. But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!!
For front brake pads. You should buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow:
1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose!
2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper.
3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease).
4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier.
5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston.
6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary!
7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing.
8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward).
9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier.
10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm.
11. Install both caps.
12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!! Check brake fluid level and top up if neccessary!!!

I have removed the rear brake pads but can't get the cylinder to go back so i can fit the new pads on my VW golf


A "C" clamp slowly screwed in should do it. Put screw end inside cup (piston) . I also use a wooden handle of a hammer to push inside cup. Wedge caliper against something solid, and push hard with hammer handle inside caliper piston. Hard and steady, it should slowly go. If not , crack bleeder screw slightly, just remember to bleed after installed.

I cant get the brake disc to push back in to replace the brake pads. Is there a switch in the Master Resevoir that I have to open and if so how?


No, see procedure below listed at autozone.com. Try opening bleeder. You may have a kink somewhere or hose decomposing internally. Else the piston is locked in place. Was the brake working before replacing pads?

  1. Remove 1 / 2 of the volume of brake fluid from the master cylinder to prevent overflow when the caliper piston is compressed.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake line. Support the caliper with a length of wire. Do not let the caliper hang from the brake hose.
    NOTE On some disc brake systems it is not necessary to remove the caliper when installing new brake pads. Remove the lower slide bolt and rotate the caliper upward to remove the pads.
  5. Remove the brake pads and shims. Inspect the brake rotor and machine or replace as necessary. Check the minimum thickness (specification is cast into the rotor) before machining.

To install:
  1. Use a suitable tool to push the caliper piston into its bore.
  2. Apply a thin coat of grease to the rear face of the brake pad and install the shim. Install the brake pads.
  3. Install the calipers. Lubricate the caliper bolts and boots. If equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm). If equipped with a 6-cylinder engine, tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
  4. Install the wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  5. Apply the brakes several times to seat the pads before moving the vehicle. Check the fluid in the master cylinder and add as necessary.

How to replace front brake pads


You'll need a few Metric wrenches and a large C-clamp or brake caliper piston tool to collapse the piston back into the cylinder. Unbolt the caliper, remove the old pads, install the new pads. Lubricate the areas where the caliper and pads go. Push the caliper piston back into the caliper and reinstall the caliper and tire. Make sure you pump up the brakes before you drive, to get the new pads seated.

Tricks to replacing rear brake pads, 2004 new beetle convertible. Caliper piston won't retract back into caliper. Using "C" clamp to retract (push) piston. Won't move back. Pushing pedal slightly moves it...


Notice the Two holes on the caliper piston face? They receive the pins of a special tool that turns and presses in at the same time to collapse the piston. You may be able to approximate the effect with a pair of needle nose pliers or such and turn & press in. The right tool works best.

How can i change the rear brakes pads?


1.Remove the cap from the brake fluid reservoir

2.Loosen the wheel nuts then raise the vehicle and remove wheel

3.Push the piston back into the bore to provide room for the new brake pads.A C-clamp can be used to accomplish this As the piston is depressed to the bottom of the caliper bore the fluid in the master cylinder will rise.Make sure is doesnt overflow.If necessary drain off some of the fluid. 4.Before removing anything,spray the disc,and brake pads with brake system cleaner dont use compressed air 5.remove the caliper mounting bolt,the banjo fitting for the brake hose shouldnt be disconnected unless you are removing the caliper or hose replacement

6.Swing the caliper up and secure the caliper up towards the spring with a piece of wire then remove the lower and upper anti-rattle springs.Remove the outer brake pad and shim then remove the inner brake pad ans shim(s)

7.Remove and inspect the upper and lower pad retainer clips,the pad retainer clips should fit snugly in the caliper mounting bracket;if they dont,replace them.Apply thin film of high-temperature grease to the retainer

8.Apply anti-squel compound to the back of pads install the new inner pad and shim(s) make sure the "ears" on the upper and lower ends of the pad are fully engaged with their respective grooves and the pad retainer clips

9.Install the new outer pad and shim if new pad has no shim take the old shimoff the old pad and install it on the new outer pad.Install the upper and lower anti-rattle springs

10.Clean off the caliper pin and coat it with high-temperature grease.Lubricate the lower caliper pin with grease too thenswing the caliper down over the disc and new pads (if the piston hits the inner pad depress the piston further into the caliper bore with your c-clamp

11.Install the mounting bolt and tighten it to the torque specifications (44-63) 99 and earlier models (51-55)00 and later models
12.Put the wheel back on and tighten lug nuts
