Question about 2003 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

Only hot air blowing out of vents

My vents only blow warm/hot air even when dial is set to cool. Air conditioning seems to be fine however. When I turn the temperature dial it feels like something is being 'flipped' but it is not smooth and there is resistance. It feels like the dial is not shifting whatever it is supposed to be shifting properly. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jon,

Sorry for the delay responding and thank you for your help! It turns out we have much much bigger problems which it appears these care are no known for. See here: http://www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomment...

Very disappointing. We are cutting our losses now and bought a Honda.

I am a nissan master technition in Wichita Ks. we see this problem frequently. there is an air pocket in your heater core, due to low coolant level. for some resion or another your vehical is consuming coolant (usually head gkt leaking into cyl). and sence the heater core is higher than the radiator, the air pocket gets stuck in the heater core.
wait till the vehical is cooled off, remove radiator cap, install coolant funnel (avalible at any auto parts store). lift front of vehical off the ground (to get the radiator higher than the heater core), fill coolant funnel and start engine. allow vehical to reach opperating tempature and the air pocket will work its way loose. you may need to rev engine to change coolant flow rate in atempts to remove air pocket quicker.

sorry, read your statement incorrectly. i thought it would not output hot air.

the common problem with not getting cool air out of vents it that the cable that adjustes the blend door (door that controls hot to cold adjustment) is bent at the control head, remove the temp control head and inspect the cable, if so it will need to be replaced, also check if the blend door is operating smoothly, if not the new cable will become dammaged in the same manor and your problem will not br resolved

    sorry about the spelling

Heater not blowing hot air

Hi Chris, sounds like your thermostat may be worn and not closing all the way which would cause your engine to run cool at times. If you have a temp gage it should tell you if the engine is actually warming up or not. If not I would replace the thermostat.

It blows out hot air even when the air in the front is cold

Hard to read your question, do you mean it blows cold air out of the front vents and hot air out of the rear passenger vents?

If the air coming out of the front is just cool and not cold, and the rear vents are warm, you have low freon and need to have it serviced.

It sounds like the control motor switching from hot to cold is stuck halfway in between the two temp settings. You will have to take it down and replace it, it is mounted under dash passenger side near the blower motor.

Sounds like there is a crack in the vent that leads to the drivers side, and hot air from the engine is leaking through.

Sounds like your freon has leaked out and your heater blower resistor is burned out. Deffinitly take this to the dealer.

97 Ford Econoline air conditioning and vent settings blowing hot

I know from experience that if the coolant is to low ( not just the freon levels in the compresor but the antifreeze/coolant level as well) the AC system will not cool and will blow hot. Check the coolant Antifreeze and freon levels, even with the Coolant being a little low my 1998 Ford E150 Van will blow hot. After you have ruled out of these possibilities and the chance it is the thermostat most likely the problem is what Ford calls the "Flap" it controls the air flow through the vent system when you switch from Heat to AC. When the Flap is working it closes off one systems air flow so as to not interfere with the current climate selection.

Rear air conditioning setting

It sounds like your rear temp. blend door is malfunctioning. You might could get a known good controller from (ebay, junkyard, craigslist) then plug it in. If this does not fix, it is probably a blend door actuator issue.
