My 98 VW Jetta will often not start when it is cold and/or damp outside. It runs fine when it starts. I have replace the starter and coil but I still have the same problem. My mechanic has suggested changing the ignition switch. I would like to get some other opinion before I spend any more money.

    Thanks

same here. i have hard time starting run over cold or rain like 5 times then finally run. but great run when drive. i did replace sparks, spark wire and new battery. i didn't replace cap and rotor. i always think keep blame on ring seal (piston) but not cause i did compression tester and they were fine. i still feel stranger about my car.

Cover the distributor cap with plastic and the high voltage coil.

with a damp environment, high voltage usually jumps to the nearest ground and would not go to the spark plug.

you can test this at night when it is damped and raining, at night, let some body start the car for you and you watch the engine compartment without light so that you can trace where the spark is jumping out.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Try to check distributer cap. It may not be sealing tight as the clips used are notorious for not sealing properly. Also check your wires while you are at it.

Every time it rains hard my car will turn over but wont start

You need a can of wire dryer and WD40.

I have the same problem on the same car.
I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and when it's damp and wet my car would not start. sometimes if i try for 20 minutes it may kick in but doing so after a few rainy days i blew my starter. Now I just spray my wires and cap with the wire dryer and WD40 before it rains. And if it doesn't start and it's wet outside, use the wire dryer. I heard some people used some shroud to cover their cap, but i don't know what they used as it's close to the engine and I didn't want something melting.

Jeep wont start when it is damp or raining.

It is probably your ignition wires. When moisture can penetrate the wire it shorts is out. Check them for cracking and especially where they are close to the exhaust manifold. I hope it is due for a tune up, this should take care of the problem. If not, you may have a dirty connection in the ignition circuit. Check all you connectors for corrosion and spray them out with a penetrant/moisture chasing lubricant.

My 98 Jimmy runs on synthetic oil and starts well after sitting in cold weather. If the weather is the problem, try checking that. If it is warm... sorry no ideas.

1998 318 Dakota hard to start in/after rain

Check the distributor cap, u can have a very fine crack that allows moisture to enter on damp days and make starting difficult. Look inside cap w/ good lighting, u can usually see it if u look carefully. Let me know what u find.

Car won't start in rain

Sounds like the distributor cap is cracked and allowing moisture in. I would start there.

!997 Jetta doesnt start when it is early inthe morning w/ dew on the Ground or rainy day.

I had the same problem with miosture and my 96 Jetta GLS dying, and I finally figured out it was the ignition coil. Spray the coil with water lightly while it is running, and it'll probably kill the car. They you'll know!
