The check engine light only comes on when the computer detects that there is something wrong in the operation of the vehicle. Take the car to an autozone, advanced autoparts, pep boys, car quest; they will run a ODB2 test on the car and tell you exactly what wrong. Plus the diagnois is free!

The check engine light can come on for many, many reasons,,,,some major others minor, but irritating
It is meant to be a helpful warning...before the major damage is done.

On your Neon...you can retrieve the codes (without a code reader) by:

  1. turn the ignition key forward (so the odometer reading appears) and back 3 times.
  2. after the 3rd time...the OBD II codes will appear
  3. have a pen handy to record them
  4. they will be for example......P0127.....P1757
  5. you can then enter on any search engine 'OBD code P0127' and you can understand what area
  6. the codes are universal
  7. the results might not be helpful...but might be a start
the following link is also very helpful in explaining the 'check engine' light and the OBD codes
http://www.obd-codes.com/

hope this helps

Battery icon displays at times but lights stay bright and nothing seem wrong.

this could be just a loose or worn alternator belt, also could be alternator brushes about to fail, with a multi meter start engine and set meter to 20v DC and put relevant prongs to correct battery terminals it should read about 13v to 14v, 12v up over is ok but should be above 13 on tick over and not much or at all higher than 14v, keep meter on battery and rev engine to make sure the charge rate doesnt fall below 12/13volts when engine under strain as this will effect battery current while driving etc. especially at night when using lights, this might be ok now but it will get worse so dont neglect problem as you dont want to get stuck in middle of nowhere one night when out driving, car will slowly start to lose power as it can only run on battery for approx an houre, its running on battery not alternator everytime battery icon shows whilst engine is running and over time this will also effect battery condition.

I have an 02 Mercury Sable-car had problems starting so I got a new alternator, new starter and new battery. Started out fine, then car started shaking when put in reverse or drive, check engine light came...

Why would you drive a week with the check light on &
all those problems?

Why would you drive the car at all, without taking it back to
where the work was done

We have had On-Board-Diagnostics on all vehicles for 31 years,
that's why the check light is on

Surely you have heard of checking for codes when you get
a check light on your dash

Until you do that, you got nowhere to start

You do realize the Alternator has nothing to do with starting
a car,& wouldn't every fail at the same time as the starter

My 1993 GMC Sierra Z71 will not start. We changed the fuel pump, the throttle pressure regulator, fuel filter, and fuel pump relay. The pump gets gas to the injectors but from there it does nothing and goes...

Hi, that's possible but first check the ECM fuse and use a test light to check for power to the injectors on the red and white wires. The computer uses a number of sensor inputs to calculate the injector signals required. If these signals are not available, the computer cannot send the appropriate injection metering signal and will usually set the engine light. Is the engine light on?

Starter cranks slowly. Battery is Ok and properly charged. Engine always starts, but cranking speed seems low.

Sounds like your starter is going bad, watch out it can go out at anytime and you want be going nowhere. Have your starter checked out.

The oil light is reset by the tech on each service. It will not go off by itself. As far as the check engine light goes you now have a code stored and you will need to get it before we can begin to diagnose. Only thing you can do is make sure the gas cap is on and the seal is no cracked or distorted. This could set a code
