check cap and rotor as well. cap is in a hard to get to spot making it troublesome for some people to change and that was the cause of my mis-fire. cap hadn't been changed since it was built. :)

Dont know lots about this witout engine size but some have 1 coil per cylender possible coil is bad or plug 02 sensor will cause some problems but a miss fire will cause it to run like trash

What does the codes p0442,p0136 &p0141 mean on my 2001 ford taurus it failed inspection for these codes

P0442 FORD - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected Small Leak

Possible causes- Missing or loose fuel cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
- EVAP system hose leaking
- Fuel tank leaking
P0136 - O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 2
Possible causes- Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 harness is open or shorted
- Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1
- Inappropriate fuel pressure
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Intake air leaks may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks

P0141 FORD - O2 Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2

Possible causes- Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit fuse
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit open shorted to ground
- Heated Oxygen Sensor (H2OS) Bank 1 Sensor 2 circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

1996 GRAND CHEROKEE CODE #P0141 AND P0138

Hi there:
Both codes refer at O2 sensor...

DTC P0141 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
This code means that the heated circuit in the oxygen sensor on bank 1 decreases time needed to enter closed loop. As the O2 heater reaches operating temperature, the oxygen sensor responds by switching according to oxygen content of the exhaust surrounding it. The ECM tracks how long it takes for the oxygen sensor to begin switching. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0141. See also: P0135 (Bank 1, Sensor 1).

You will likely notice poor fuel economy the illumination of the Check Engine Light.

A code P0141 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
open or short to ground in the wiring harness
O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
O2 heater element resistance is high
Internal short or open in the heater element
Note: Typically a failed catalytic converter does not cause this code. You're more likely to see a P0420 code for a failed converter.

Possible Solutions:
Replace oxygen sensor (cannot repair open or short that occurs internally to sensor)
Repair short or open or high resistance in wiring harness or harness connectors

DTC P0138 - O2 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1, Sensor2)
The Heated Oxygen Sensor (2) located rear of catalytic converter produces an output signal relative to oxygen storage capacity of catalytic converter. Ho2S 2 signal is less active than signal produced by front oxygen sensor. This code sets when HO2 Sensor voltage is greater than 999 mV for more than 2 minutes (time depends on model. Could be as high as 4 minutes)

There may be no noticeable symptoms except for MIL illumination. Possible high fuel pressure can over rich the system.

A code P0138 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty O2 sensor
Short to battery voltage in O2 sensor signal circuit
High fuel pressure (not as likely)

Here are some potential solutions:
Replace O2 sensor
Repair short to battery voltage in o2 sensor signal circuit.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

The code that comes up is p0141. the book says that it is a O2 sensor heater malfunction. But the book does not show me where the O2 sensor heater is located. I'm confused. I have located the 02 sensors. 4...

P0141 is O2 Heater Circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 2) It will be the sensor AFTER the cat on the side that has #1 cylinder. On your car it's the PASSENGER side.

Code # P0141 and P0138

You said you changed the O2 sensors, which ones? I do believe that sensor 2 is the Catalyst efficiency monitor, it looks like an O2 but it's function is different. This sensor is behind the Catalytic converter, the O2 is in front. Bank one is the bank that # 1 cylinder is on, so the sensor that is defective is the 2nd sensor back on that sides exhaust pipe.

P0141 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Performance Bank 1 Sensor 2

P0138 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2
