The clutch in your car is operated by a hydraulic system, from what you have posted it sounds like the master or slave clutch hydraulic cylinder have failed, this causes either a leak of fluid and or air in the system, this causes your symptom, these cylinders are sold separately but from past experience it is unwise to replace just one, as the other usually fails shortly after the repair is done.

If you find this info useful please give a HELPFUL or FIXYA! rating. Thanks

You simply buy the master/slave all enclosed unit. You can buy it at the Saturn dealer for around $90. All you do is remove the battery to get to the old one, and it "snaps" in place. You can do it yourself, because it is a self contained unit, no bleeding or adding fluid. Be carful not to press the clutch pedal before you install it or you'll break the plastice restrainer thing on the end. These are a few bucks to replace if you do break it.

Sounds like the clutch plate and or pressure plate are worn or damaged.Could be a bad axle.Does the speedo run up even though the vehicle is not moving,if it does suspect a bad axle.

2004 Saturn Vue shifting problem

You should probably check the shifter cable. I had the same thing happen and then I couldn't shift into 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears. Then the cable snapped and I had to replace it. Be careful "man-handling" the shifter. If you break the shift linkage at the base of the shifter it's about $45 from the dealership. It's cheap plastic and doesn't take much to break. If you really want to know if it's the shift cable and not the gearbox crank the engine, have someone hold the clutch, disconnect the shift cables from the box, and manually shift the gears. If they move smooth, it's probably your cable which would mean there's a kink in it somewhere. You can't fix that. Depending on the VIN you're looking at anywhere from $189 (what mine cost with tax) to a little over $200 (from the dealership brand new). Talk to the parts desk at a Saturn dealership and they can tell you which one you need. Hope this helps
