on a 2001 gm i believe you turn the ingition to the run position with the engine off and with-in 3 seconds step on gas pedal 3 times all the way to the floor. the message center should reset and go off. turn key off and then start car. to see if reset.sometimes you have to go slow 3 times to floor with gas pedal.MAKE SURE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING WHEN YOU DO THE RESET.
I see alot of people cant figure out how to reset there oil change light on a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero/ Bravade w/o (DIC) driver information center. To do this follow the steps below.
Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off. Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal slowly three times within five seconds. The reset is complete when you hear the chimes and the “CHANGE OIL” light goes out. If the light stays on and no chime is heard, you will need to repeat the reset procedure. Turn the key to OFF. If the “CHANGE ENGINE OIL” message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure. and its as easy as that and now you can change your oil on your own and not need a dealership to reset it for you.
The person that changed the oil should have resetted the light.
Just drive to an AutoZone store, ask for somebody to check your vehicle computer codes, once they check them up, ask them to reset the change oil soon light, they would do this at no charge. This is a free service they offered to all their customers.
Most often you need a code reader with a reset function that can connect to the computer jack under the dash and reset factory functions like that. Pain in the tush if you are changing your own oil. Mechanics and dealers have the equipment to do that reset.

Press and release the RESET button to display “OIL LIFE % HOLD RESET NEW” is displayed. Press and hold the RESET button for 2 seconds until “IF NEW OIL HOLD RESET” is displayed. Oil Change Reset A press of the OIL CHANGE RESET switch will allow you to reset the oil life feature to 100% (or your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage). After you have the oil changed, you must execute the following procedure. Press the OIL CHANGE RESET switch and hold for five seconds as the M/C counts down for five seconds. After a successful reset the Message Center will display “OIL LIFE RESET TO 100%.” If you have established a Personalized Oil Reset Percentage, the display will show that percentage instead of 100%. To ensure accurate oil life indicators, perform this reset procedure only after an oil change. Your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage allows you to establish a smaller oil change interval than the manufacturer’s recommended interval. To establish your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage perform the following procedure: 1. Press and hold the OIL CHANGE RESET switch and press the RESET switch while the display is still counting down the 5 seconds to reset. The display will change to “START OIL LIFE AT XXX%.” 2. Press the OIL CHANGE RESET switch until the displayed percentage is the Personalized Oil Reset Percentage that you desire. Your choices are 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40% and 30%.
