Question about 2000 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

Loose exterior mirror

The passenger side mirrors spring clip has slipped off the post allowing the mirror to swing around on post rather than stay locked into a detent.
How can I get access into the mirror housing to allow me room to compress the spring & lock the clip back onto the post? This unit has the power adjustment feature but no heater or signals. By rotating the mirror I can only gain access to two of the three screws attaching the mirror to the frame & there is not enough room with the mirror in place to compress the spring.

Thanks

The drivers side rear view mirror is loose. How can I tighten it down?

Put a sheet metal screw between the mirror and mirror body below the mirror. This will allow the mirror to still break free and swing if you hit something kinda hard, but will keep it from moving freely. There is no other way to tighten it. It's just a case of the spring becoming fatigued.

Mirror glass replacement on drivers side

i don't have aviator. here's explorer, should be the same.

You will see a small rectangle where the screwdriver goes in. You are pryingtowards glass. The retention is about a 3 inch rectangle that has a lip around it that snaps onto a rectangle on the mirror body.

Exterior passenger mirror

You must first remove the door panel, trace the wiring and disconnect the harness.
There are several screws attaching the door panel, so be careful. These must be removed first to allow all sides to come free.

Passenger side mirror

yea. both my mirrors started flopping around like they were not latched or something..
i finally took them apart like you said.. (the screw driver and the wire retainer clips.. )
then i discovered the spring that holds it in place hooks on to a spring hook flange tine casted into the mechanism's frame structure. and that tine was bent over and cracked on both sides.
when i bent it back with the screwdriver, i discovered it was an amazingly hard metal alloy, but it was an engineering failure so i wasn't going to put it back together in that condition.

so i broke the tine completely off
then i wrapped a coat hanger wire around the end of the structure and extended a loop of coat hanger wire into the spring well and hooked the spring to it. i'm not sure if that's the problem you are having but i wanted to post the solution i am trying to at least give people an idea or 2 .. i feel confident that it will hold at least till the hook on the other part of the mirror frame cracks off the same way. i guess it was a bad batch of metal. that metal was hard
