Interesting analogy Could be a lot of things. If engine running fine other than noisy I would pour into the oil 1/2 cup of ATF, (automatic transmission fluid) as being a detergent oil it will free up sticky lifters and clean engine. I put ATF in every time I change my oil. Hope this helps. Pleas rate suggestion so I can see if worth my time helping solve problems... ty

Was told to use premium 89 octane gas only this true?

This is true. The only time you need to apply gasoline with higher octane is when preignition is present. If it sounds like marbles are bouncing in your engine when you are driving then get higher octane. However if the car is in good mechanical condition (cooling system, oil serviced regularly) then 89 octane is perfect.

There is a loud sound coming from the engine which sounds like marbles

Maybe it is marbles or tennis balls, just kidding. This sound like your piston rods are cracked or broken. This is a very serious problem that needs to be fixed so your not stranded somewhere.I am not exactly sure because I have not heard the marble sound that you are talking about but that's the sound that a cracked or broken rod makes.

I have been told that my car's Knox sensor needs replacement @ £300. Its an Audi A4. the car is running alright though. Is it essential?

If there is excessive vibration you can get a false positive on setting a code. This sensor helps your computer set the timing of the engine for maximun fuel economy and to keep it from pinging (sounds like marbles in the engine). If it is truly faulty the computer will go into fail-safe open loop mode which would reduce economy. If it is running as good as before and your mpg have not dropped and you do not hear any detonation then drive it and save the pounds. Make sure the wire to the sensor is connected well.

After removing the engine cover and disconnecting the battery ,disconnect the air pipes that run across the manifold , these are normally brittle so handle them gently , remove them by pushing the clip at the base of the pipe down while pulling the pipe out.Do this with the fuel pipes too .The inlet manifold is held on by 4 bolts found next to the inlet pipes. There is also a bracket behind the manifold held on by two philips screws. When you refit the new manifold , apply some rubber grease on the o-rings as not to pinch them.Get you radio code before you disconnect the battery.
