Question about 1983 Nissan Pickup
I'm trying to help a co worker who owns an 83 Truck. Starts the truck and then turns on the headlights. The right side low and hi beams turn on, followed about 5 seconds later by the left side low and hi beams. After about 5 minutes the hi beams turn off and everything is fine. He replaced the headlight relay last week but the trouble is still there. Any thoughts? Is there some sort of mercury switch on these things?
I found the problem was with the headlight switch. I took the housing off and inspected the contacts for the light switch. Over the years the dielectric grease was causing the hi beam post to get stuck enough to make a hi resistance connection. Once the truck warmed up the grease on the post, it would slide back into the "off" position. I cleaned up the plastic and relubed it. All is well and my buddy is happy he didn't bring it to Nissan who quoted him $120.00 to fix it.
