Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

1998 Jeet Cherokee with random starting problems.

I'll try to explain. The jeep starts fine in the morning and if sitting for at least 30 minutes. This issue only happens when it's off for 5 minutes or so (stop to get gas, or run into a convenient store, etc). I turn the key to 'on' and the electric comes on (lights, radio, etc) but the jeep will not start. I can repeat 5-10 times and nothing. If it just sits for 5-10 minutes, it will then start right up. Or.....if I step on the brake, turn the key into the 'on' position and shift out of P into R-N-D....it will start up. The battery and starter have been replaced and it is still hapenning. Make any sense?

Check your neutral safety switch, it is supposed to prevent starting in gear and it sounds like it is time to replace it. countrycurt0

Make sure your fan clutch is working. No fan, no cooling of the condenser, no heat dissipation, no cold air. Start the truck and make sure you feel air movement, a lot.

Your ECU is going bad and needs to either be replaced or repaired. That 'no check engine light for 20-30 minutes' is a common problem that tells it's an ECU problem. The ECU won't power the fuel pump and other relays until the check engine light illuminates on the dash.

I'd suggest the ignition control module, however I'd have a certified mechanic check it out just in case...
