Ford focus 1.9tdci LX 2002

Whilst driving, at random intervals and situations, pre-heater coil light come on and then engine cuts out after 30 seconds. Garage have fitted new fuel filter and cam shaft sensor in 2 attempts to overcome problem: it now occurs more frequently and feels like it is faltering sometimes when driving and also when starting. Initially it would happen about once a week, now it occurs every 2 or 3 days. Can you help?

coil pre-heater, also known as glow plugs, for pre heating the diesel / air mixture when starting the engine. This is a UK diesel car. Thanks

I have exactly the same problem. My car has been off road for a few months prior to which it was fine. The first time out a few days ago it stopped after a mile or so and would not start. It was towed to a garage where they said the fuel filter was dry and heavily soiled. They cleaned the fuel lines, fitted a new filter and added fuel treatment and road tested it. It has not cured the problem and it happened 3 times on a short journey yesterday. I seem to have to wait and it starts although today it didnt start. 1.8 tdci ghia registered Nov 2002.

I have the same problem with my Focus ghia tdci 1.8. Just started a few days ago after a peiod of 'rest' over the summer. It had to be towed to a garage (where it started but they thought they should investigate). The fuel filter was dry and heavily soiled. A new filter was fitted and fuel lines cleaned and road tested. It stopped 3 times yesterday and if I just waited it started again, however, this morning it doesnt want to go. 'Honest John' of the Telegraph writes 'Focus with 1.8L Dura Torq TDCI engine built from 05.2001 (build code 1B. Engine running erratically or does not start. Common cause is that the fuel pump is unable to deliver the required fuel rail pressure due to wear of the cam, rollers and shoes. The damage is caused by insufficient bedding of the rollers during early life. This also creates metallic particles which can enter the high pressure fuel system and lead to injector failure. To rectify this concern, a revised fuel pump, new injectors and associated parts should be installed. If this concern is present, it will generally be indicated by a flashing flow plug indicator showing that a fault has been detected.' Do you think that this is our problem?

    Sorry, 'flow' should read 'glow'

I have the same problem except my happens only every few weeks. However, I have developed another intermittent fault along the same line which means on occasions the engine will cut out without warning several times in the space of 1/2 a mile. So far this has only happened just after starting, so not on a motorway!

    hi,
i have had exactly the same problem on my tdci 1.8 ghia 02 plate. difficulty to start on the morning sometimes not at all and cuts out on the motorway without any warning. i have plugged it into a diagnostic and it was said it was a fuel rail pressure censor. however, the bad news is that ford say they do not supply the censor seperately and that the new rail complete is approx. £150.00 part only. i have just located one at a scrap yard and will fit it today. watch this space for the result!!

fitted the fuel rail pressure sensor and went ok for two days then happened again. i then fitted a cam shaft position sensor and the car has been running perfect for a week now. if your car is pre 11/2002 you will have to fit the wire and connector as well as the sensor. cost for the sensor is £18.00, wire and connector £49.00 plus vat, make sure you fit the grey sensor !!
if the new connector is the same as the old one, you do not need to fit the new one.check the part number of them both to confirm.

A flashing light is BAD. Its damaging the cat converter. I would check or replace the spark plug wires ( if all OK, then) replace the coil pack. I would not replace anything unless they test bad. but these car are known for bad coil packs.

If its just the speedo failing and the rev counter works ok, its likely to be the speed sensor which is on the gearbox. This will have to be removed as soon as possible to avoid engine damage! Expect to pay about £30-40 not £128 like some have paid from a Ford dealer.

The speed sensor as well as talking to the speedo to say how fast youre doing also talks to the fuel pump and adjusts the amount of fuel to send to the engine according to the speed your doing. So, if it thinks youre doing 0mph, it will supply a minimum amount of fuel and is likely to stall when slowing down. You might notice a lack of power whilst the speedo is failing as its starving the engine of fuel, causing it to run a lean mixture, which also burns hotter and could overheat and damage the engine.
