Engine cutting out

The engine cuts out when travelling slowly or the car is idling, sometimes not starting back up for a long period of time. The radio also loses power but all other electrics work. Have just had a new ECU installed as this was showing a fault on the diagnostic test but it has made absolutely no difference, now very confused.

Car cuts out and on board system flashes up with "STOP". Sometimes power goes on and off and car continues to run.
Radio also loses power and turns itself off, sometimes requesting radio code to be entered before resetting itself after ignition is turned off.

battery is brand new and car runs beautifully until problem occurrs.
Problem is intermittent and sometimes car can run for 2-3 days with no problems. Car ran perfect for a day after picking up from garage after new ECU fitted (diagnostics showed problem with engine management system), hence believed problem to be solved.

Why would anything to do with the carburettor cause the radio to turn itself off, even if the engine does not cut out, surely this problem must be something electrical?

If you suddenly lose power (electricity, not engine power), while driving, that is a problem with wirings.

It means a wiring or a connector is bad, it loses contact while you are driving and power goes off.

If you lose power on all car , including radio, instrument panel, light etc, the most likely is a bad contact on battery connectors, or a bad wiring / bad connector on the wires from ignition block to coil, distribution etc., or a bad wiring in the instrument panel or computer control module (ECU/ECM).

The car engine will keep running even if you lose power to instrument panel and devices.

When is the main battery contact, or the ignition wirings, if you lose power you won't be able to start car back.

When is a broken circuit in control module, or instrument panel (dashboard), the car may keep running , and you just do not have power.

The problem can be fixed following wirings from ignition and testing them. It will be easier to find out the problem if you can test the car when there is no power.

You need to clean your gicleurs of your carburetor. In your carburetor you have gicleur of low speed and gicleur of high speed.

In your case the gicleur of low speed must be cleaned to avoid the engine stop at low speed. It is very easy to clean that, you have to take out the gicleur and clean it with air and put it back again.

This kind of problem occurs when the gas is not good, dirty in your fuel tank, or bad combustion.
I recommend also a tune-up

Carburettor checkup and Tuning is necessary. Engine cuts in slow speed, so also check the accelerator wire.

Tuning means you need to increase the RPM and which can be set to normal with Techometer.

Check out its battery too, and if need add water and charge it.

If your radio only stop then it would be some bad wiring connection with its battery terminal. If other electrical instrument such as Headlight, horn etc also goes off,  then the complete wiring cable of Battery to the power switch of car need to be check. Check out the terminal of battery also as after running vehicle it gets heat up and loose connection to generate power.

As you already mentioned, at slow speed the Car stops, hence it need tuning of the RPM.

2003 ford focus cuts out at idle only.

Do you have you foot on the brake when this occurs. Sometimes when there is a leak in the brake booster the idle ratio is up set and the engine stops. If this is the case replace the booster. Test by removing the hose to the booster and blocking off. If the problem doesn't appear that will be your problem. If there is no change have the fault codes read for a faulty sensor.

I have a 1998 hyundai coupe 1599cc the engine cuts out when idling and i have to jump start it or wait for about half an hour before it will start again

This sounds like a battery or alternator problem.

Lets start with the battery, just because the car starts in the morning does not mean the battery is good, A bad battery will start the car and as car is running and drawing power out of the battery the battery which is getting charged back up from the alternator but if battery is bad and not accepting the charge this will do a few things.
First it will cause damage to the alternator because , the alternator will try to charge the battery with no result and so it keeps charging at high rates and heats up and causes damage to itself , the next thing is battery loses voltage slowly until it does not have enough voltage to keep engine going , inturn engine stalls out,
I would start by first having the battery tested by a shop with a battery tester, the next thing is the alternator , have that tested.

Your problem will be a bad alternator or battery. good day.

HOW TO SET U PDRAUGHT CARB ON A BRIGGS STRATTON ENGINE MODEL 80102

Hi Dawber, I believe if I was working on your engine the first thing I would check is the ignition timing, in other words the point setting if fitted, Set the points at point four five millimeter and then try again. If your engine is fitted with electronic ignition, very very slowly tighten the idle mixture control screw and if the machine slows down screw very very outwards until the idle becomes as smooth and even as possible. Once you are close to the optimum, follow the same procedure back and forth until you have the optimum setting. Regards John

I have a Dodge intrepid that keeps leaving me stranded. My car just cuts off on me. While I'm driving. Sometimes while my car is in park. It just CUTS OFF! I've noticed lately that as my temp gage...

Hi there,

If you're willing, we can try checking your computer for trouble codes - this will help identify any electrical issues.

Note: there's a 50/50 chance this procedure will work (as this does work on the 1997 model):

- With gear in Neutral, start engine and rev the car to 2,500 rpm, then 'gradually' reduce revs down to idle speed.
- with park brake secure, slowly cycle the gear lever through each position (down to 1st, then back up, ending in Park)
- turn Airconditioning ON, then OFF - turn engine OFF - Within 5 seconds, perform the following Ignition Key sequence (without starting): ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON (if done correctly, your ODOMETER should display a series of 4-digit codes). Please reply back once you have your codes..... Cheers,

Kia Rio cutting off

im assuming that changed the oil unit you mean sending unit ? if so could be electric short in the pick tail or worse wiring harness. second there is also possoble vacum leak .third while unit was being replaced something didnt get put back or got knocked loose. created a new problem. most times as thing are going bad they dont register until it is a prolonged problem as it took 2 days for the check engine to go out that also might have been normal. you might also notice while sitting at park when you turn the wheel you will notice ia differance in the idle, if its almost stalling then its probley your idle, needs re set, or your idle controle valve is going bad ,did it get checked or cleaned when they serviced the throttle body. and also could be your mass air flow sensor going bad or need cleaned

My Subaru legacy grandwagon has started cutting out at idle speed (intermittently) & also sometimes if you go on a short errand then it wont start when you get back in the car. Engine turns over...

You could have a number of problems. First do a complete tune up, proper timing, new plugs etc.

Turn the key and do not give it gas. If it starts slowly give it gas and let me know what it does. I suspect it will cut out. In that case, you might have bad injectors. Let me know if I can be of further help

Engine cuts out at a prolong idle speed.

Hi all, I had much the same problem, engine bouncing around when idling as if it were firing on a few cylinders and even cutting out completly sometimes. I found out it was the breather hose at the rear right hand side of the engine that runs to the front. there is an elbow piece at the back, this could have developed a leak or in my case it was further back behind the engine, hope this has been of use guys. one thing I would like to point out, beware of the cooling system plastice hose conectors, the outer may look fine but some of mine just brake off and crumble in your fingers, it's as if the inner plastic is destroyed by the hot collant over a period of time, i'm in the process of replacing most of mine.

F350 super duty, engine cuts out without warning

Check to see if your truck was recalled for a faulty cam shaft sensor. Some sensors develop hair line cracks which allow contaminants to get in and the sensor becomes intermittent. The symptoms can include sudden shutdown of the engine so a recall was issued.
