Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue
When replacing the air filter in a 2002 Olds Intrigue (which is a real POA, BTW) which side goes up?
I have always replaced the filter myself and installed it with the screen on top and the filter 'leaves' down. The last time the filter was replaced was during a dealer service about 20K miles ago. When I changed the filter this past weekend, I noticed the dealer had installed the filter 'screen-side down', toward the intake. When I called the service department, they stated that 'screen-side down' was correct.
Is this true, or are they just trying to cover-up a mistake by some shop monkey?
I didn't notice any difference in performance or gas mileage from having the filter installed upside-down.
Actually, when I think about it, screen-side down makes sense, since this is the part of the filter that would be hit by any large debris.
The wire mesh or screen side should be facing up. The screen is there as a reinforcement to stop the filter material from bowing-in from air pressure and debris when the car is moving.
