Question about 1994 Geo Metro

1 Answer

Timing belt and alternator belt both broke. Chance of cylinder damage?

1994 Geo Metro 3 cylinder, (1.1 liters, I think). 180,000 miles. Car was not running well at the time, seemed to have a broken Throttle Positioning Sensor, because I had to keep the engine revs high when idling, or it would stall.

When the engine failed, I was in a parking lot, just barely started backing up, slightly gunning the motor to keep the revs up, and suddenly I heard a pop just as the motor died.

Opened the hood and found that the alternator belt had broken. Had someone else look inside the oil cap to see if the cam shaft would turn when I cranked the engine over. It did not, so we knew that the timing belt was also broken.

Now I am in the process of trying to replace both belts. How do I go about replacing the timing belt on this car, and is it even worth trying to fix. Because I worry that the cylinders might have been damaged. Are my odds any good at all? I am not a mechanic, but have had my hands in an engine before.

Thanks for the advice. I did in the mean time, get some help replacing the timing belt and alternator belt for me. It fixed the immediate problem, and it did not seem to that the valves had gotten damaged at all. But sadly, just a week later the water pump sprung a leak and spilled all of the coolant from the car. I'm quite a bit suspicious that the rest of the car is going to give away in one big kaboom, or maybe just a lot of little ones.

So your advice to scrap the car is one I'm very likely to take.

    Thanks.

Hi 94 metro 180,000 on the clock save your money the valves will have hit the piston so they will be bent and only if your lucky the pistons might not be damaged but then you do the head it will blow the bottom half of the engine out before to long and you have to find out what the oridginal problem is and put right cut your loses sell the car as weigh in valve scrap you should get £100-£150 put it to another car

hi sorry to here that it broke down again especially in light the valves didn,t bend thats lucky and rarley happens but i have found in the past you have two choices as it has such high mileage you are definatley going to have problems as it is the whole car thats done the mileage you can spend your hard earned money and replace everything as it crops up or cut your loses and get something with less mileage because once you start spending you are sort of committed then and you don,t want to spend your money on the repairs and because the expense of the repairs gets you down you get rid and someone else gets the benifit of all the repairs you have done its something worth thinking of before you start spending to much all the best paul

I have a 1991 geo metro 3 cylinder blue a timing belt is this engine a interference type so that the vavles are broke

No this engine is not supposed to be an interference engine.
So you may not have damaged any pistons or valves.

Depending on mileage, Geo's have timing belt and it should be changed every 60k, if you've done all that's mentioned I suspect timing belt is broken.

My timing belt broke and i replace it when re assembling everything i ended up 180 out and fixed that problem and now my car wont start any suggestions

A broken timing belt can damage engine components. Check the head for bent valves or anything else that looks out of order. Make sure that the timing it set properly. If you're still having problems try looking for a re-manufactured head or a used. You should be able to get a good deal on eBay.

Timing belt geo metro 95 hatchback

roll the crankshaft pulley around until u get the mark to line up with 0 or TDC. once u get the cover off mark the cam sproket to the head with whiteout and mark the crank gear to the block also. (in case they move on you. loosen tensioner and pry to one side.tighten tensioner bolt and remove the belt. install new belt and get the slack to move toward the tensioner side. (u may have to move the cam slightly to allow all the slack to go toward the tensioner. then move it back to the mark, making sure the crank didnt move. loosen tensioner bolt and let it spring toward the belt and apply pressure with yr hand a little more snug while u tightn bolt. then rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions by hand and your marks should line back up. if the marks are more than 1/2 tooth off u must re do it!

What cylinder does a 92 geo metro fire on?

I think you're asking which cylinder is the #1 cylinder used to set the timing. The answer to that is the one closest to the front, where the belts are, passenger side, or the left one as you look at it from the front of the car.

As long as they are the same type of engine ( I believe they should both be 1.0L 3 cyl engines). Most parts for the Geo Metro from 1992 to 1994 interchange with out a problem.
