Question about 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Power steering pump seems to be dieing on my 2001 hyundai elantra

After doing some research I have found that my problem may lie with the Alternator belt possibly being loose. Wouldnt that be a more constant high pitched scream and how would cause my power steering to cut in and out periodically- mainly when my car is warming up. If it is the power steering pump where is it located?

My fluid is not leaking but we did siphon out some and added Lucas Power Steering
Stop Leak it hasn't seemed to help any. The fluid before hand did not smell burnt or seem discolored well maybe a bit dark but the car does have 102,000 miles on it. Otherwise the car is great. There seems to be a little slack in both the power steering belt and the alternator belt is there a figure as to how much it too much slack? Oh and if I could afford a different car I dont think I would be posting any questions.

i would bleed the system to start. there is a way to do it but have to look online for it or the rack might be going, my car did the same thing i put lucas in it, put a new pump on it and changed all the belts and had the power steering flushed with BG and nothing helped it so then i changed the rack and all better

On the front of the engine, it has hoses going to it and or coming out of it, there is oily fluid inside, you know judging by the number of problems I see with this brand I would think a differnet car brand would be the real fix

If it happens mainly when your car is cold, it is a common symptom known as "morning sickness" or "black rack disease". Check your power steering fluid to see if it has become discoloured. If so, try flushing the system and replace the fluid with an approved power steering fluid. If this does not solve the problem, you may need to replace the rack and pinion steering unit.

My car is overheating and the power steering isn't working I noticed my belt I think its the the Water pump drive belt the pulley closest to the front of the car is loose, in turn making the belt loose,...

Yes, the serpentine belt runs all those pumps. Water , power steering, alternator ,ect. If its loose have the tensioner and belt checked out and replaced.

MY 2001 Elantra was making a horrible screeching noise whenever i turned the car on and whenever i turned the steering wheel. i thought it was the power steering pump so i replaced the pump but i didnt...

Hi, it sounds more like you have a improperly tensioned drive belt. If you didn't get all the trapped air out of the power steering system this maybe the cause of your stiffer steering problem now. Try loosening the P/S belt all the way and starting the car if you still hear the noise you know its in one of the other drive belts. good luck

All I did was wiggle the bolt out . You have to loosen the power steering pulley and bracket and remove the fan shroud on the left side.

Power steering pump--2001 hyundai elantra

If it's not a serpetine belt, max deflection of 3/4" on longest segment should be safe,  don't make alternator belt tight as a drum or you will burn out alternator bearings quickly.  If it has serpentine belt, the spring tensioner should keep the belt properly tensioned unless it's worn out.
It only needs to be tight enough to not slip, too loose will squeal and you will have to tighten,  to tight will kill alternator and you will spend $$.
