Most of Ford's climate control selectors are controlled by vacuum. If that is your case, the vacuum lines may not be plugged in. The default for the selector is defrost which is a neutral position controlled by a spring. This is so you at least have defrost is cold and wet weather. You may have to take the dash cover of and look behind the selector switch. Also some vehicles have an access panel on top of the dash.

Why does my heater only blow hot air?

if only blows hot from defrost location only, then there is a vaccum leak from intake manifold to the selector switch. or the vaccum selector switch is defective. if it is a electric selector switch then the mode door is broken, common issue. when the truck if first started, is there a repetive clicking noise? if so then it would be the mode door being broken, warrenting having to remove the dash and recovering of the air conditioning refridgerent, or freon, r-12, or r-134a as this year is R-134a, draining coolant as heatercore needs removed, and removing the entire heating and airconditioning unit, located behind dash on passanger side, disasembling and replacing door. if clicking noise is pressent and time and money, and certified air conditioning mechanic not available, then finding the mode door actuator, or electric motor that turns the door, and unplugging it will cause the noise to stop, but forever have no airconditioning, as default location is defrost. if able to select from defrost to panel or floor location but heat only, then blend door is broke. i believe mode and blend door are same part number, but might not.
also check for recalls and tsb's, or technical service bullitions, as might help fix it. recalls are free, and tsb's are only to help you diagnose the problem, and you would have to pay to have fixed or fix yourself, but having to evacuate and recharge air conditioning system and haveing to have the special tools to remove ac lines it may be a job best suited for a professional. When I turn my vent selector to defrost on the far right (air con off)the air conditioning comes on. The dash vents will blow ambient air, but defrost setting blows air con. Any ideas?

It's normal for the A/C compressor to come on with the defroster to dehumidify the air so the windsheild won't fog up under humid conditions. You can still control the air temp. out the vents with the temp. select switch.

check the vacuum lines in the selector switch. the baffles that switch from hot air and cool air are vacuum controlled and if the lines are detached or cracked the suction will not move the baffles.

Air condition and heat

Hello Ray
It could be a couple of things No.1 I would look and see if maybe a pen got into the vents on the defrosters, Sometimes that does happen and it will hold the door so it can't shut to allow air flow to the vents facing outward. No.2 The switch is bad and not allowning the doors or gates to open and close properly, Listen and see if you hear the door or anything differant when you move the selector switch, If you do hear it trying to change its probably something stuck. No.3 Could just be a vacuum line off under the dash somewhere broken or fallen off. If thats the case and you are not very savoy with that kind of stuff You may want to consider taking it in to a respectible shop, Which is hard to find these days.LOL Well Ray I sure hope that helps you out some what, Thanks for using Fix Ya.com Bear001

Air flow selector

Your mode door is controlled by vacuum check the vacuum hose on the left side of the intake manifold. these some times fall off leaving your mode door with no vacuum and the default position of the mod door is defrost.

Heat/ac

Hello,
You would be wise to check all the small rubber hoses under the hood as it would appear that you have a vacuum leak preventing the airflow door from moving to any other position. Look for cracked /cracking, split hoses or disconnected hoses and replace as necessary.

Good Luck!

Dash Vents wont blow as selected

THE COMPRESSOR IS SUPOST TO RUN NOT MATTER IF IS IN HOT OR IN COLD MODE SOME TIME THERE IS A POSITION WHERE THE A/C WILL BE OFF AND THIS IS ON THE KNOB CONTROL WHERE YOU SET DEFROST AR FT VENTS
ALSO ON THE THE SWITCHING FROM DASH TO FLOOR CHECK FOR ANY VACIUM LEAKS FROM THE ENGINE COMPARMENT SINCE MOST OF TIMES THIS IS CONTROLED BY VACIUM ACTUATORS
