Question about 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe

Coolant is the coolant that lasts five years very expensive to buy when it gets low ..or does it get low....I dont see a difference but my son is concerned ....

Shouldn't be a cause to be overly concerned.
My questions to you:
- Why did you have to add coolant, and "just because it was low" is not the answer.
- What kind of coolant did you add, and why do you think thay it is wrong?

If the engine overheated and that's why the coolant was low, we should be trying to discover why the engine overheated. Things like Bad Water Pump, blocked radiator, bad thermostat, blown head gasket.

The coolant level is the indicator that something else could be a problem.

Check your coolant level when engine is cold. You should have coolant up to the radiator cap or overflow bottle cap(depending on car model). If it is low, fill it with the appropriate mixture or ready mixed coolant. DO THIS WHEN ENGINE HAS NOT BEEN RUNNING FOR AT LEAST A FEW HOURS OR FIRST THING IN THE MORNING - DO NOT ATTEMPT WHILE ENGINE IS WARM!!!! Once you have filled the radiator and/or the overflow bottle, reinstall cap and you should have heat.

Thermostat may be stuck in ''open'' position thus allowing too much flow of coolant through the engine and preventing it from getting warm enough to provide heat at idle. If that is the case, replace the thermostat. Do this last as it is likely the most expensive way to go.

Just a thought, your vehicle is now about 16 years old. When was the last time you had the cooling system flushed, and coolant replaced? More than 3 years? Strongly suggest you get that done or do it yourself if you can do it in an environmentally friendly way.

The overheating is caused by the sludge. It is very easy to correct this problem. Remove the radiator cap and open the drain valve at the bottom of radiator. If possible, remove the reservoir and flush out with water. Make sure to get all sludge out of reservoir, then reinstall. Once the radiator stops draining, insert water hose (without nozzle) and turn water on. Keep the drain valve open. Run water through radiator until it runs clear. Once it runs clear, start the engine and let it run while keeping the water running through radiator. Allow engine to run until the thermostat opens up. Continue running water through radiator with engine running until the water from drain runs clear. Once you have done that, turn off the engine. Close the drain valve and refill radiator with proper mixture of coolant and water. Once radiator is filled, start engine and let circulate through engine. Coolant level will drop as the coolant starts circulating. Shut off engine and top off radiator. Fill the reservoir with the required amount of coolant. Testing the coolant at least once a year will help prevent this from happening again. Coolant should be replace a minimum of five years, less if coolant bottle specifies.

I have a leak in my radiator at the very top right below coolant hose


You need to replace your radiator. Buy a "new" one. Used may last a week, or 2 years; you never know, and new, is worth the expense.

Mixing engine coolants?


toyota did some good research years ago .. they found that anti freeze that contain silicates caused excessive wear in the water pump seals .. most antifreeze at that time contained silicates .. so toyota developed their own type .. and they charged a lot for it .. it was red in color .. it was designed to last a long time and cut seal wear to a minimum (no silicates) .. so it was a good idea to use their super antifreeze .. now almost all antifreeze can mix with other types but do you reallly want to contaminate the expensive stuff already in your car with something that might contain silicates .. in this case toyota has a good reason for recommending certain types of antifreeze .. of course they used to recommend only their own brand but i hope that has changed .. i would use only long life antifreeze that is recommended by toyota or that states "contains no silicates" .. even buying their expensive stuff isnt so bad since it lasts so long and the echo uses so little. .. i am not sure what the new long life antifreeze contains ... did they ever address that problem ?..

Is the pressure at 35 psi with the compressor not turning? Or it is running, 35 psi low side, just not cold from dash?

Coolant


Use dex-cool, it could be orange or red. Mix it 50/50 or get the ready to use and poor it straight in.
