sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times
Depending how long this has been going on When you completely run the battery down it takes several hours of driving to completely reset the computer. I would give it some time before I panic. I am lucky as my Lesaber turns the lights off after ten minutes if the key is off.and even interior lights off if I leave the car door open.
These boxes rely on electronics and hydrualics.... the gearbox has internal electronics and external, in the form of a control unit(computor) that also gets lots of information from other control units on the car... does it just stay in one gear?, if so is probably in a "limp home mode".... sorry but this is a dealer diagnostics job or and internal failure of a mechanical/hydraulic part within the transmission...... I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.
You have a bad gearbox position sensor located on the transmission. When the transmission computer sees the fault in that sensor it goes into a protective mode in your car starts out in second gear that's why it is sluggish. This is a very common failure on that car. The heater issue is not related.
