Question about 1996 Lincoln Town Car

Need to replace rear door strikers

I need to replace the rear door striker bolts on my 1996 lincoln town car. is it an easy out & in , or do i need to have some alignment tool to align everything up? and does the striker bolt just take a large phillips head screw driver to get the job done ? thanks for any , and all help DJ

How do you adjust the tail gate to stop the annoying rattle when driving?


Most rattles are due to the back door not closing tight enough. There is a lock/striker that the door lock assembly latches to. Usually the striker/latch is bolted to the rear floor/bumper area and the screws/bolts securing it can be loosened and the striker/latch moved forward and retightened which in turn will cause the door to be tighter stopping any rattles. You may also have a rattle inside the door assembly itself or loose paneling causing this issue

The door latching mechanism closes around the striker plate, or striker, or striker latch.

Why does my 1999 Lincoln Continental alarm system go off by itself and then shut off after 5 or 10 minutes?


this could be the door striker plastic has broken off this is the post sticking out of the frame when you close the door the lock closes around the striker to keep the door closed this striker could also have moved slightly from opening/closing the door thousands of times try this open your windows get out close all doors set the alarm wait a minute then try to lightly move the door/s in and out by grabbing the door at the rear part where the door locks to the frame where the striker is if it has any play in it the connection will break and this will make the alarm think the door has opened and the alarm will sound getting the door to close tighter will stop it from happening this is also true for the trunk if you press down on the trunk or your able to pull up on it a little the same thing will happen its loose and will trigger the alarm if this is not the problem I would then go to the door pin switches that turn the lights on/off when the door is opened/closed especially if the alarm was aftermarket installed but you can be sure the alarm thinks that something is opened and the door/trunk/hood are the only places that they are

HOW TO ADJUST DOOR SO IT WILL CLOSE


Hmmm... If like other cars, you would normally adjust the striker post on the B-pillar.
Unless the hinge pins are worn, in which case the door would drop, and need lifting as you closed it, to allow the lock to align. The pins are usually replacable.

The rear passenger door mechanism will not latch. What do I do?


The part of the latch that is attached to the body is adjustable, It has somehow been pushed too far in, and the latch on the door cant reach it, or, somehow, the latch mechanism on the door is already closed. You will need tools to fix either problem. If it is a loose striker, you may be able to wiggle the assembly out enough to get it to latch, but it will need to be tightened. The head on that bolt is called a torx. I'd be a T-40 or a T-45, but it may be a bigger drive than that. If it is second option, you will need to pull the door handle, and then using a screwdriver or something similar, gently pry the latch back into the open state. It should be easy to do. If it isn't, stop prying.
Actually, if it's either problem, it would be both. They tend to cause each other. A closed latch will push the striker away, and a striker that's pushed back to far can cause the latch to close and miss it.

Doors where hard to close without the weather door seals. But with them on they will not close. The body plates more but not enuff on the cab? I need HELP.

The doors Hinges or Striker need to be adjusted to make up for the weatherstrip thickness. To do this, loosen the hinge-to-door bolts for lateral adjustment only. Loosen the hinge-to-body bolts for both lateral and vertical adjustment.

BEFORE YOU START:
  • Determine which hinge bolts are to be loosened and back them out just enough to allow movement.
  • To move the door safely, use a padded pry bar. When the door is in the proper position, tighten the bolts to 19-25 ft. lbs. (26-35 Nm) and check the door operation. There should be no binding or interference when the door is closed and opened.
  • Door closing adjustment can also be affected by the position of the lock striker plate. Loosen the striker plate bolts and move the striker plate just enough to permit proper closing and locking of the door.
TO ADJUST ON A: F-150, F-250, Expedition and Navigator
HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT
  • Loosen the front door hinge to front door bolts.
  • Adjust the front door alignment.
  • Tighten the front door hinge to front door bolts to 19-25 ft. lbs. (26-35 Nm).

FRONT DOOR FORE AND AFT ADJUSTMENT Check the rear door hinge adjustment before adjusting the front door hinge.
  • Remove the front fender.
  • Loosen the front door hinge to body bolts.
  • Adjust the front door alignment to specification.
  • Tighten the front door hinge to body bolts.
  • Install the front fender.

DOOR ADJUSTMENT The following procedure is for performing fore, aft, up, down and tilt adjustments.
  • Remove the door striker.
  • Loosen the bolts only enough to allow for slight door movement.
  • Carefully close and adjust the door until flush with the adjacent body panels.
  • Carefully open the door and tighten the bolts.
  • Re-install and adjust the door striker.
  • Check the door for proper operation and alignment.
STRIKER ADJUSTMENT Mark the position of the striker before loosening.

Door adjustment for a 96 f350 dropped about 1/2"


Here's the solution: You might want to park it under a tree and tie a rope to the door to pull it up when loosened.

It unscrews counter clockwise. More common is the metal around the area fatigues and needs to be built up...

1996 lincilon continental drivers door will not shut


The latch in the door is in the closed possition most likley or the latch is broken all together. Hold the door open pull on the handle. use a screw driver to unlatch the closed catch. it looks like a sideways w that closes in on itself around the striker on the door.
